The station is best known as the location of the TOPGUN training program and the movie of the same name. In 1996 the school was relocated to Naval Air Station Fallon. During the heyday of TOPGUN the station was nicknamed "Fightertown USA".

    Stationed first with VF 121 from about August 1967 to December 67. then went to Japan in January 68 to join VF 21 on the Coral Sea. Return to Miramar in May 68. Was with 21 until October 69, honorable discharged on the 9th of Oct. Most of the time I was with the missile control techs, worked on AUG 10 system. Anybody on board during those years?

    I was a Pacemaker @ VF-121 from 78-82, when VF-121 decommissioned in 1980, I was transferred to VF-126 (Bandits) right down the street from VF-121. I was attached to VF-126 from 80-82 and then was selected to The Blue Angels from 82-86

    Remember the "Nickel Snatcher" from foot of Broadway to Coronado before the bridge? Also, old airport before current location? How about the "Seven Seas" locker club on Broadway? Lots of great memories!

    I was there in VF-213 from Feb. 1963 to May 1965. Squadron was flying F3 Demons. Made Wespac cruise 1963. Upon returning from cruise squadron began transition to F4 Phantom. VF-213 was to be re-designated VF-113 but that never happened. I was released from active duty 1965 and never made first cruise with Phantoms on Kitty Hawk. Miramar at that time was somewhat remote and I remember taking the bus to downtown San Diego before I got my first car. Re-visited the area in 2012 and couldn't believe the changes. Enjoyed my time at Miramar and the San Diego area.

    When VF-124 was disestablished my wife and I were invited to take part in the ceremony and we were asked to bring our Stearman PT-18 to be the center piece on the flight line. What an honor it was to see our little rag wing trainer nestled among the F-18's---quite a contrast .We were invited because I was a plank holder at Miramar and we had participated in quite a few base airshows. After the Navy moved Top Gun to NAS Fallon we flew to Fallon to be in their airshow. When I landed at Fallon I did what most tail dragger pilot do at least once---I ground looped my baby and broke a wing. The Navy let us put the plane in one of their hangers until we could patch it enough to fly it to a repair station just south of Fallon.

    My first tour at NAAF Miramar was in 1952. I worked in Base Ops as a Plane Capt for the only two a/c based there. We had an SNJ @ an SNB. with he only jets came from North Island to practice carrier landings. My second tour at NAS Miramar was in late 53 to June 1955. I worked as a Plane Capt in VF124 when we had 12 F7U-3's. In the beginning of my tour our unit was called Project Cutlass and later changed to VF-124. I read a few comments where the writers thought Miramar was out in the Boondock---you should have been there in 1952.

    I was at nas miramar when it was out in the boondocks in 1959 to 1961 with attack sqd 115 ARABS wild days and later I was there with VF96 and VF 121 also VAW 112 between 1971 and 1978. Walt williams USN retired

    I was there from 1972 thru 1976.  Nas Supply and also VF-124. Got to see a lot of different things quite a culture shock coming from North Dakota.

    I arrived at Miramar early 75 to join VF-111 Sundowners.  I put 33.000 miles on my new Yamaha 650 that year it was one of my favorite years ever.  Used to go riding with my friend John "Jack" Mannion would love to hear from him.  I got off active duty in 76 transferred to the reserves.  Meant to go back to San Diego to live but that somehow never happened.

I was there

I was stationed at VF126 June 78-Nov 80, Nas Miramar OpDet Nove 80-Aug 83 and VAW-110 Aug 83-Nov 85. A long time ago but fond memories. My daughter Alexis was born while I was at NAS (she was well known there) and my son Keith was born while I was stationed at VAW-110.
