  • I knew the Long Beach story and it still stinks of Political bull.

That said, I lost all my uniforms in a fire but still have my pea coat (that is because I was wearing it at the time).  Volunteer fireman I was and my car caught on fire at one of the brush fires.  All my clothes were in it.. I was just released. We got the fire out and my 53 plymouth was toast.  Long time ago..

  • I still have my Dress Blues....Geeeeeeeeeee I wish I could fit into them

  • Terry: Here is the link for my explanation

************ OK Ocean Shipping Company... I was close

LONG BEACH DESK - The Long Beach Naval Station was tentatively placed on the Military Base Closure-List by president George Bush in 1991. President Bill Clinton, closed the naval base last in 1993. That resulted in the loss to Long Beach, California of 17,500 military and civilian jobs. The economic impact of the of loss was $52.5 million and drove the California economy into the tank. It has never recovered.

Between 1995-1996, during the heat of the Clinton-Gore Campaign fund raising activity, the Clinton administration actively intervened to make sure a Communist Chinese cargo container shipping interest got a too-good deal on a Long Beach, California, shipping terminal.

The Secretary of the Navy has formally turned the base over to the City of Long Beach. But, the Port of Long Beach has signed a letter of intent to lease the property to the China Ocean Shipping Co., a steamship line run by the Communist Chinese government.

  • Hi Terry:

I was stationed in Long Beach and when the Base was going to close, the Marine's wanted to purchase that base but then President Clinton declined that offer and instead sold it to a Company called Chinese Sea Shipping' Of which is the same Company that had given large donations to his re-election bid.

L loved Long Beach... But not Housing.. If you lived there some of you, you know what I mean, specially when you hear Gun shots down the street from housing.

Have not seen the Base since I was on the USS Prairie,

  • Keep them Tracy! Your children or Grandchildren or relative may want them some day. Don't dare give them up."

  • Jerry,  I would like to hear your explanation also.  I have a friend that I was stationed with that finished out his Naval career at Long Beach.  I think he wold be interested also. Was in that same area with a small reunion with a friend (Judge now) who was stationed at NHCamPen.  The area that Long Beach was at is all a shopping center.  Still can hear the police firing rang behind the berm. Spent most of my career with the Marines as a Navy Hospital Corpsman (Grunt corpsman) My Dress Blue uniform was left in Viet Nam after a Typhoon blew over the tent as I was out in the field.  Terry Schiele RN (HM-2)

  • Ya Ronald, that was by the Administrative Offices near Personnel

  • that is some valuable property...lots of $$ at stake.....

  • Jerry, wasn't there a scene in top gun where tom Cruise was walking along a building with a lot of pillars and entering a door, that was also taken at NTC.

Also I  am asking for your explanation, Ron

  • I was at NTC when they were filming the Movie " TOP GUN" I was at C School and was 200 feet away when they were shooting the scene of Top Cruise driving off in that little car fast out the Gate.

I like the Base there and it truly is a sad thing to have closed it down. Just like Long Beach Naval Station, But that was for political reasons and had a terrible ending to that event,

Ask me and I will explain

My name is Phil Mercuri. I was assigned to company 130 and was Squad Leader #4. Is there anyone out there who was part of my company. Our Flag Bearer's name was Hillary Wong. Unfortunately, I do not remember anyone else. Though I do believe there was on other individual named Ace Goodman. I could be wrong.
