  • NTC San Diego - Apr 1974 - Company 941 ....

  • I attended boot camp at NAVSTA San Diego, CA on 06AUG87, followed by an "A" school. Soon after I reported aboard the USS Lynde McCormick DDG 8, stationed on NAVSTA 32nd St. Followed by an assignment to RTC/NTC San Diego, CA. Long story short, I made San Diego my home base San Diego and I was there as the base was disappearing which made no sense as a Sailor since we had the best location for training, follow up A-C schools, Shore/Sea commands ...but like everything the Station was victim to politics/politicians and all about who knows who and money. She will always have a big spot in my heart. R, LT Rolando A. Ayala (Ret)
  • My father was at this training center in 1966, company 003. He passed away in an accident but I have his yearbook "The Anchor." I would like to give it to someone who can appreciate it or archive it for its historical importance. If anyone knows who might be able to take it, please let me know. I also have a yearbook from 1967 USS William Lawe.
  • Having lived in San Diego, I used to go to NTC to work at times.  I worked for the phone factory and did a lot of work on all the bases.  What surprised me the most was when they took Top Gun and put it at Fallon.  This after they spent millions building the best of the best equipment for Top Gun.  Marines came in and destroyed it as not needed.  Then I watched NTC go away. Sad times but the memories are still there and if you go into a telephone room you will see an Andy Capp drawn on the wall, with the saying What me worry?

  • I have to agree with JL, it was a base I would have never thought to be closed. It was the "backbone," of the Navy and San Diego. T.I. was the same, I never thought with the amount of service people going through it that it would close. Progress takes it's toll. You are right though, the sounds and smell bring back fond memories.

  • It is a shame to drive through the compound (former base) and realize what progress has done.

  • The USS Recruit was easy recognized, and some of the building it a shame to see our bases disappear.

  • It is a shame they did not save more of such a historical place! However, there are several buildings that are suppose to be protected and saved. The concerns are they are not living up to those promises! The least of which is the old TDE-1! The Sea Cadets are trying to get it for a facility to host them. That would be great so long as it is also available to the vets as a museum/reunion venue! Who else will look out for the history and tradition if not us!

  • I attended MR (A) school at NTC San Diego, I was really surprised this past year when I visted San Diego after being away from San Diego for 47 years. The city of San Diego now owns where the train center use to be.

My name is Phil Mercuri. I was assigned to company 130 and was Squad Leader #4. Is there anyone out there who was part of my company. Our Flag Bearer's name was Hillary Wong. Unfortunately, I do not remember anyone else. Though I do believe there was on other individual named Ace Goodman. I could be wrong.
