  • Thanks Richard, I find it force of habit as after my one duty station I (a storekeeper) was assigned to HQCO 1st Marines as a quatermaster for deployment to map Da Nang for establishing camp for the 1st expeditionary forces 7th Marines. Jar Head talk became habit. No dis respect as my cousin was commanding officer of the 1st and never was one to complain about the Corp. However the deployment was not too much fun .

  • Thomas Collier that's CC MC Brackett or Company Commander...DI's were next door at MCRC...just to keep it in order.

  • Will start of by saying was in CO040 DI MC Brackett. Frequent San Diego quite often and the ole base has really gone through some face lifts in the past years.I am currently Chaplin for the VASVW Veterans Association Sailors of the Vietnam War. Invite any of you all who served then to come on over and visit. Remember Pebble Field well. Spent a nightmare there one night because of someone giving the Chief a hard time answer.

Well its nice to be a member and looking forward to some good chats and info

  • Thanks to those who have sent pictures and videos about the training center.  My wife had never seen the center.  It was good to show what it was like there.  If any of my former friends from Company 224 in 1963 are on here, please write.  I had an Anchor book of the company, but can't find it.

It was lights out in the barracks, I was laying in my top bunk looking out into the hall and there was a guy setting at the bottom of the stairs writing a letter.  I was about ready to doze off when all the sudden this guy was enveloped and turned instantly wet.  The guys up stairs somehow fill this condom to a huge size with water  and dropped it on this poor kid,  There was a lot of laughing, then here comes a rush of recruits down the stairs with their rifles in their skivies trying to get shoes on but a chief wasn't giving them a chance.  He had the company above us marching back and forth for about a hour.  I bet there was some sore feet.  I have to admit it was funny seeing this guy enveloped with the condom before it broke.

  • Company 142 1950- one afternoon after chow Steve Brown was asleep in his top bunk, someone tied his shoe laces to the bunk,  well we were alway on edge and someone yell "fall in"  and Brown jump up and fell to the deck on his back,  luckily he was well built but was sent to the hospital for 3 days,  No one knew who did it so the Chief had us fall out with our rifles and we did full sweeps until someone confessed, we went for quite a while, finally a guy who was getting a medical discharge said he did it, we knew he didn't do it, but was not sure who did. The guy did a good deed for all of us. Well Brown came thru treasure island for discharge, he had found out after 4 years who did it, a guy named Lauer a commanders son and Lauer was coming thru TI also.Just ahead of Brown, I hope Brown caught up with Lauer.

  • Went to boot in summer of 1965, CO 343. Was between my Jr. Sr Year in high school. What a summer vacation. Was USNR at the time.

  • I remember my first Liberty went downtown Diego, went to Broadway Betty's, i wonder if it is still there.  I was walking by a cafe and there was a really neat cake in the window, so i went in and had big piece then walked back to the YMCA and was standing out front and started to feel sick, so caught a bus back to the NTC and was holding onto a strap and all the sudden i passed out and was on the floor and a lady started shaking me and saying "sailor dear wake up" and two chiefs were setting there and one said "look at that drunk boot" I got up and went to the main gate and asked if they had any coffee and they said no.  I think it was my blood sugar.  When I was in advance and stood guard duty at the main gate they had a coffee pot going.

The next liberty 3 of us were downtown and talked a 3rd class into buying us some beer and we went a block off of broadway to a closed gas station and were having a great time and my buddy started directing traffic and the next think we knew the cops came and had us get into their car and turn our white hats inside out and hold it under our face in case we threw up.  They took us to the shore patrol and they put one of us into a cell and my one buddy and I had to set on a bench until we looked sober, then this chief told us we could go, but the guy in the cell was staying over nite, so when we walked out we tried to walk a straight line while a chief stood in the door. until we were out of site, so much for Liberty in San Diego.

My name is Phil Mercuri. I was assigned to company 130 and was Squad Leader #4. Is there anyone out there who was part of my company. Our Flag Bearer's name was Hillary Wong. Unfortunately, I do not remember anyone else. Though I do believe there was on other individual named Ace Goodman. I could be wrong.
