  • I reported to Ike in Mar. of 1977. She was still being built and we had to live in Carter Hall on The Norfolk Naval Base. The guys that got there first were living in townhouses in Newport News, We moved aboard in May of 77. Newport News wasn't too bad the greasy spoons were good places to hang out. They even had a nice mall back then. I went through all the sea trials, the first Med Cruise and most of the IO Cruise. We all thought The Ike sucked while we were onboard, it's only after looking back that we realize there were some good times too.
  • I was stationed on the IKE from 02/2000 to 06/2002. We deployed on the Millenium Cruise in 2000 to the Mediterranean and Arabian/Persian Gulf. I was the LCPO for CS7 Divison.
  • She was my first command out of A school. I had some great times on board her.
  • Was on the Ike for 1.5 cruises and a refueling at Newport News Shipyard. Was the IM5 Division Chief for a good part of the time, and while in the yards was the ship's Transportation Chief. I ran the bus company for the ship during that time, and along with my Warrant Officer, helped create the large sailor only parking lot along the railroad tracks. Boy, did we put in some long hours during all that! My CWO4 and I took turns being out there directing traffic the first week or two it was open. Se we were getting there at 0500 and leaving in the evening as late as 2100. Long days! Once we were underway again, I was Repair 1A Locker Chief, then i think I was with 1F. Anyway, I was in the thick of DC stuff. I was also the Departmental Damage Control Chief. Between running the IMRL then doing all the damage control stuff, I probably knew that ship better than just about anyone on board!
  • As a member of VAW 121 "The Bluetails" I had many occasion to serve aboard Ike. Thankfully I never had to do a full cruise but I came close when me and a few of my squadron mates were COD'ed aboard during the Med cruise of 83'. I came aboard on Aug 11 and didn't disembark until we pulled back onto Pier 1 in Dec. The day she pulled out for her next cruise I headed for A school in Memphis. By the time I got back to my squadron the ship was heading for refit in Newport News. My last time on Ike was the work up cruise of 87 where we stopped at Caracas and St Thomas.

  • I was station on the IKE in the early 90's. I was attached to the AIMD department. I started in IM-1 then later transferred to IM-4. I had a great time on the ship. We had a good crew and alot of fun.
  • I was on IKE in the mid to late 80's,taken several med cruses with her, I would like to know is there anybody that served in V-2 div catapults, There where many good man that I would like to see and slug down a cold one with again. let me know take care
  • My time on the Ike was very short! Back around end of '84 I was with VA-85, I had just got back from AN/AAM-60 EOSTS school in North Island,CA. I was TAD at the time to AIMD Oceana. All ofasudden, I got orders to check out, and report to VA-75! I and abunch of guys from 75 got sent to Ike, as relief, I, because their FLIR shop's EOSTS test bench was down and I was the only guy on the east coast with the NEC for it. By the time we got aboard, by way of New Jersey, Azores, Rota, and Sigonella, and helo ride to the ship, the guys there had already fixed the thing! So I hung around for about a month (Dec.) and got to see Israel again, and Athens for the 1st time! Then I and a few other guys got sent back home, around Christmas.
  • I don't remember cold ones on the flight deck or hot dogs. I do remember being given one piss warm Budweiser and one piss warm Michelob on the hangar deck and it tasted like JP 5. I left in Sept. during that cruise.
  • I remember that, very well. Nothing like a couple of cold ones on a flight deck, huh Joel? Plus the hot dogs sucked..........LOL

Cruise 88

Any of you on board when we returned from the Med in 88?  We had SECNAV Leman on board and the CO was Capt Beck.  As we began our turn to Hampton Bridge Tunnel we struck an anchored tanker and took out the antenna between El 1 & 2 as well as the deck in the CO's in port cabin.  We had picked up Tigers a day before.  Man what a day.
