I have my car and I decide to drive it cross country instead of selling it and flying home. I figure I can drive it in four days, maybe five. I request leave for 20 days and travel time to the west coast was five days. So I had 25 days until I had…

Thanks David I can start with when I received orders to Vietnam, came in as orders to Vietnamese language  school. Called the detailer and asked how i got selected.  He told me I had aced my language battery when I joined the navy.  My reply to him that was Spanish one to ten, tell me what Texas boy cannot count one to ten in Spanish. Vietnam 67-68 caught Tet in 68.

This has got to be good!  David, do you sling this much bullshit daily, weekly and monthly?  Or did I catch you on your off day?

    • Donn Harvey Behl July 30, 2019 at 5:11pm

Hi David, In 1968, most of my time was spent on the America with VA-86, getting back late Dec.. We headed back out on the Coral Sea around Sept 69..I had an apartment in Jax in 69 and remember listing to " Crimson and Clover" over and over on the car radio.

I also remember listing to the moon landing at the apartment, as I was too poor to have a TV.

We got back from the second cruise around June 70 and I got out in May 71. Most of the time was spent going to schools at Cecil an Jax…..and getting ready to get out.

I've been back to Cecil, but not much there anymore, barracks', clubs, and exchange all gone. Mostly the hangers and the chapel are the remaining friendly sites. I'm glad that they are trying to make the chapel a formal memorial, given the memorial next to it.
