  • Where in Florida were you stationed? We would fly down to NS Mayport Florida to embark on the Forestall . Went to Mayport many times.

  • Hi David, It's great to know you. I see you were on the West coast for some time. I was in A6 Intruder Squadron VA-85 "Black Falcons"  at NAS Oceana in Virginia Beach Virginia. We deployed on the U.S.S. Forestall CV-59. I made 3 Med Cruises with them. I miss the Navy and would do it again. Hope to hear from you again.  Jim Piliero AD3

  •  This took place on the NITRO, while in the Med.

  • I would do it all over again if I was younger.   It was a good place for an 18 year old to grow up and be responsible.

The use of the G.I. bill was a true help with my education, after discharge. I went on and acquired my degree in Industrial engineering and worked 40 plus years in the trade.

I recall one incident while on the main switch board during G.Q. The EXEC called the engine room and said we are making black smoke. The engine room reply was, we should because we are burning black oil.The EXEC. DID NOT TAKE 5 MIN TO GET TO THE ENGINE ROOM. THE PERSON WHO MADE THE REPLY WAS NEVER FOUND.  There are many more, but that was a long time ago.

  • Thank You! glad to be aboard David!  What’s a few months between comrades? I’m sure the memories aren’t to much different...

  • I dont't know if this counts a recovery but I did have the honor of being the TA-18 driver when Apollo 9 was off loaded at pier 1 and towed to LP-2 after is's mission.

  • Thank you David!

I was a torpedoman aboard the the USS Orion from Aug. 1972 till May 1974.

While I was stationed on the Orion I became very good friends with David Boomsma. I saw David had a post on this wesite and I would love to get in touch with him. I didn't see any contact info so I hope he sees my post and contacts me.

After my time on the Orion I was stationed in Keflavick Iceland for a year and the transferred to the reserves.
