  • thank you for the welcome!

  • Thanks shipmate. Looks like we were both active at the same time. At least for a couple of years. Sea stories later.
  • Thanks for thr welcome aboard David, I can't remember my RTC company # 15 November 1968-January 1969 , Christmas spent on the Back Dock of the Chow Hall, New Years Spent in the Hospital with Measels. Don't remember much else.

  • Thanks for the welcome.  "fair winds and following seas" David!

  • Not certain how many sea tales I can spin since my Navy days ended so long ago. Also, the GC was a tender, and whenever we got underway, pulling the lines usually resulted in the pier sinking. Thanks so much for the greeting!

  • Thanks for the hale and hearty welcome!  My Navy experience was great.  I get more nostalgic about it as the years roll by.   Never served on a ship!  Vietnam then Japan in COMMS stations.   Published a station newspaper with a buddy and played music for troops in an Army Soldier Show program at the tail end of my hitch in Vietnam, and in Japan I had office jobs and lived off base the whole time, playing piano in O-Clubs at Camp Zama and Yokosuka.  A captain of a cruise ship, a regular at the Yokosuka O-club offered me a gig on his boat going back stateside, which is how I came home.   Just about the coolest  4-year chapter of this old life.  Thanks for asking!

  • This is for all the sailors who have been to the west pacific and in particular the P I  In Subic bay there is an island called Grande island. it was used by the Navy and had ballfields and an EM club. transport to and from provided by small navy boats at ,regular intervals. I only spent one day on the island but it left me with good memories of a special day I would just like to invite others who have been to Grande to leave a comment to share of your memories of the island

  • Hi there, let's see...it's been a while. Joined up as an EW then changed rate to RM... I made it to Ft. Allen the beginning of 1979 and left Roosy Roads the beginning of '82. Worked in the Comm Center Tech Control (2318).

I remember hurricane parties during hurricanes Freddie and David and the worry that the base will flood. I remember the time the Eastern 727 landed on the base thinking the runway was Ponce's airport and that when it took off it blew off some roofs across the road.

I remember Capt. Ferdinand C. Duggan III and how he prevented some of us from going up to Sebana Seca for memorial services when a few of our buddies were shot (one killed one shot in the face).

My kid was born down there... I remember buying a 70 'Cuda for $400 and now kicking myself for not hanging on to it or the 440 Charger I picked up in San Diego...watching those Barret Jackson Auctions can be torture...

One of the people I remember most is an RM1 Fred Fowler. He was the person who showed me the "real" ropes of Tech Control and some of his lessons still serve me today. Great guy and I miss him and all of the people I had the pleasure to meet.

"The Fort" was a special place. Being a "plankowner" at the new comm center at Roosey and the time spent there was nice too but there will never be another "Fort".

  • Thanks David,

I was a Chief Gunner's Mate before I became a Surface Ordnance Limited Duty Officer (LDO) :-).
