U.S.S. MAZAMA AE-9

Ralph Hann, March 23, 2010 at 4:45 p.m.

I went aboard the Mazama in Mare Island, CA  August 1944 and assigned to the First Division. We served in the South Pacific as part of the 7th. Fleet under Admiral Bill Halsey. We took part in the Battle of Leyte Golf, October 1944. On January 12, 1945 we were torpedoed by a Japanese Kamikaze Submarine. After repairs in Guam we headed back to the USA stopping at Pearl Harbor and then to the shipyards in San Francisco, CA. for major repairs. I left the ship in May 1945 before it headed back out to the Pacific. The Mazama is recognized as the only US Navy ammunition ship to ever survive a torpedoeing.
