  • Started my career there (1996) as an ABH worked both in the hangar and flight deck. Transferred off the ole Chucky V (2000) onto Legalman school in Rhode Island. Two deployments and two yard periods, didn't think I'd ever get off that ship.

  • Plank Owner.  Checked aboard about a year before commissioning.  Made Chief

along with about twenty others during that time.  Was in OR (?) division caring for the AN/SPS-48C radar system.  Enjoyed all the work-ups in the Caribbean.  After our first run through the ASTEC(?) range, they found the coating had started flaking off the shafts causing so much noise we could be heard shortly after leaving Norfolk.  All four shafts were replaced with shifts intended for the CVN-71.  The ship rec fund had to pay for a barge in St Tomas when it sunk while serving as the landing platform at the stern for the liberty boats.  When the ship left on it's first deployment, I had to leave the ship on the last CAD back to Roosevelt Roads due to my wife's hospitalization.

  • As a plankowner of the Carl Vinson I couldn't be prouder that the deck of "our ship" served as the platform of the very first Carrier Classic. I was especially moved how when asked "where does this rank amongst your life's experiences", all of the coaches and players stated "This is number 1" . The Navy is and always will be my number 1 life's experience. Go Navy!!! PNCS (SW) (Ret) Douglas H. Taylor Sr.

old man carl

i never had the pleasure to serve on that great lady,, ie all ships are ladies, did know a CWO and he loved her,i think in some ways i am telling his ueligy,, pardon the spelling,, i still have issues with rank.to be honest i do not know about the Vinson, never servered on her, but he held her in high degree, enough so that he actally talked to his family about it, where he never talked about anything.i know that i am horrible because i love the battle ships and the big guns, not sure how to do…
