  • I Served aboard the Moose   from 67 -68   Captain  Cushman , Master Chief E-9 Shields (MAA)  he had 39 years in and asked how many was I going to do and I said Chief Im a kiddie cruiser and I came in as  a short time.   Had a great time as a  deck ape giving up my snipe FA for SN

Only Cruise was Mayport Fla and Bermuda  as the Moose was not that sea worthy :-)

  • Served from Dec. 1969 - Sept. 1971 when she was put into moth balls. Reported on board right before we left for Gitmo and became Capt Smith's driver for about 6 months. Then transferred to the Electrical shop working for EM1 Lewandowski until we started decommissioning her. After this, I was transferred to New London on board the USS Fulton for 5 years.
  • Ernie I Had forgotten all about the Captains car going overboard. I was one deck above it on watch and I remember hearing one hell of a commotion below me till I looked out and saw the car sinking. I was tied to the stern wall that had d-rings on it and was just hoping that when we sank the bow would go first and I'd have a chance of survival being in the stern. If I'm not mistaken the welds did not hold on the captains car or the panel truck. I,m just glad we made it in one place. Thanks For The Memories!!!!!!

  • Almost forgot, the storm in the North Atlantic, 6 days, 100' swells and 80 knot headwinds, the Chaplin gave any who wanted them, last rights. The cooks could't cook, making a half pot of coffee was a task as it would slosh out faster than we could make it. the ship woud be underwater to the first island and it washed the captains car overboard and a panel truck. the pick up got wedged between the first island and the life lines(railing) it took off our radar, the anchors caved in the hull and the keel had dents in it bigger than my head.

  • I remember being aboard the Cadmus for the Med cruise and we where in Valetta Malta, 65 or 66 I was a mess cook. Remember piping revelee in the mess cooks quarters and they all got up, showered, put on clean uniforms and went to the mess decks and they where showing the 10 pm movie. I almost wound up overboard but was laughing so hard they started laughing with me.  I took care of the chiefs mess, they paid me very well and I had open gangway liberty. Great time. to  old to remember names.

  • do you remember an EM2 named stanford? this guy rewound a motor on the uss georgetown using a piece of wood as a form for rewindindg the motor.a tall lanky guy who was smart as hell.he left the georgetown and was transfered to the cadmus as was an EM2 NAMED MAC DONALD.THE LAST TIME I SEEN MAC HE WAS A MASTER AT ARMS ON THE MESS DECK OF THE CADMUS. he was my godfather  on the georgetown.
  • Hi. Mates, I am Fred Langill and was on the Cadmus during 1968 and 1969. I had a knee go bad while onboard and ended up in the hospital in Feb of 69. While on board I was assigned to the Electrical Rewind Shop. I got out of the Navy in 1970 as an EM2. Prior to Cadmus I was on the Glennon DD840 in Newport and the Fearless MSO 442 in Charleston, SC. I joined in 1963, went to EM school in Great Lakes and was a member of the Bluejacket Choir during Boot Camp and while at the GL Training Center, Main Side. I have been a resident of Edinboro PA since 1980. When I look back at our time in the 60's it is hard to imagine that many of us were actually rollover sailors serving on World War II ships like the Cadmus. It is amazing  to see the technology the Navy has today. My son is a Staff Sgt in the Marines and even the Marine Corps is so much different than when we were in. Fair winds and calm seas to all.

  •  Reported Aboard 9/01/1966 thru 09/68 William Leon Teague SFM2 Sheetmetal shop.
