  • Yes David, it was a small exchange, snack bar and barber shop.  Uniform pieces for HMs only, toiletries, small radios, alarm clocks, etc.  The snack bar had the standard pre-packaged snack and a short-order grille.  There were a few tables to sit at too.  I used to pick up "breakfast" for the ER when I worked there.  I'd call in to muster, get everybody's order, then bring it down to the ER.  We "developed" a cardiac cannonball breakfast sandwich, egg/cheese/sausage with mayo on whole wheat bread.  The civilian working back of the grille used to see me come in and just ask "How many specials?"  Used to eat there often when I worked nights too.  If I remember right it closed at 1900, so I got some extra sleep not having to wake up and make it to the chowhall before it closed at 1800.

Joseph, I too first started out in the back barracks, then moved off base for awhile, then back in to the barracks by the snack bar because I didn't want to do another rental contract.  Ref Mike Stover, it is very possible it is him.

  • Snack bar?  Was that there 73-76? Don't remember it.

  • Addendum, 1st time 1971-74, worked ward 12, then Hospital Trans and ward 17 Printshop. 2nd time, 1976-79, was AAMC, Appt. Desk, EKG, and later, Recruit Dispensary.
  • Youre right on the money, couldn't remember ward11, I was on 12; Orthopedics, ENT, some oncology. Everything else, your on the money. My first tour, I was in the bks in the back of the compound, second time there, was in the one up front by the snack bar. You speak of Mike Stover. There is a retired Chief IDC up here at Bethesda, I believe is a Stover. Possible to be the same?
  • Boy that picture brings back memories.  The close side of the big bldg. was AMCC offices on the first floor and the long section of the bldg. housed Family Practice and the EKG Clinic.  On the second floor was Out-Pt. Admin, the appointment switchboard, the corpsmen's duty rooms, the ER Doc's room and the Allergy Clinic.  The ER (all three rooms and five beds) was opposite the AMCC (5 offices and a triage room).  Also on the first floor was the Pharmacy and two waiting rooms, one for the ER/AMCC and one for Family Practice and EKG.  The new Out-Pt. Records bldg. was accessed through the exit past the Pharmacy.  I remember the stairs being kitty-corner to the right opposite the AMCC desk.  I don't remember any elevator.  The loading dock was off the ER.When I was there Ward 11 was Surgical, Ward 3 was Medical.  Let's see if I remember right, 4 was SOQ, 5&6 was L&D/OB-GYN, 7 was ICU-CCU, there was either a bldg. between ICU-CCU and the OR or an addition to the OR that housed Respiratory Therapy, 8 was OR-Recovery Room, then the ramp back to the ER and to the ADMIN bldg., then the Lab, Peds. Clinic, 9 was Peds. Ward, can't remember what 10 and 13-16 were, 17 was the MAA office and Chapel (or was the chapel in 16?).  One of them was Staff Education though.
I remember the Exchange/Snackbar, there were also barracks right there too.  I spent my last eight months in those barracks, first in an end room with Mike Stover, then a room by myself when I made HM3.  The Pysch unit and the Chow Hall were on the same side of the street as the ER but opposite Ward 3.  When I worked AMCC and the ER I remember walking down the road in good weather and taking about 5 extra minutes when it was raining because we had to take the ramps.
Boy, it's amazing how much comes back to you when you see a picture.
    Thanks for posting.

  • I spoke with Mr. André Sobocinski, Historian in the Office of Medical History at BUMED, today.  he said there is little in the archives but provided me with a pic of the buildings Circa 1970-ish? The ramps are missing, but I will attach a pic that I have marked the buildings.  The only pic available was the south side, from the ER down to Ward 17 (print shop/MAA Office).

  • I found this pic of me along with 4 others being frocked to 1st Class at NRMC Orlando, Dec 1978.  Im second from far right.  Anybody recognize the others? 3 Corpsmen and an MM1 (MAA).  The Captain is James Zimble.  He became the SG later, then the Dean of the Uniformed Services University at Bethesda.  He passed away 14 Dec 2011.3439427435?profile=original

  • We probably all know each other.  I worked AMCC too at the desk. Sometimes did EKGs down the hall.  One of the CA’s at AAMC was HM2 Kathy Austin.  Was married to HM2 Dave Austin (Hosp. Transportation).  We need some pics from the time.  My biggest regret is that in my early years in the Navy I didn't take many pics.  The ones I did have from the Orlando era (the first time 1971-74) my ‘X’ took years ago when we split. I was there, or the Recruit-side from late 1976 to 1979.  Jan 80 left and went to IDC school in Portsmouth. I have a picture in my Office at Bethesda of me being frocked to HM1 at Orlando with three others, by CAPT Zimble.  I’ll see if I can scan that and get it attached.  CAPT ‘Z’ eventually became the SG, retired and was the Dean of the Uniformed Services University (USUHS) at Bethesda.  When stationed at Bethesda, I would run into him occasionally and we would reminisce about Orlando.  He passed away a couple of years ago. .

  • Yes, I know Naymond well.  We were stationed at Orlando at the same time, hung out together.  He was a senior corpsman at the RTC Dispensary on the wards around '76.  He retired a HMC, spent most of his time with the MARDIV after Orlando.
And I also worked the Out-Patient Clinic by the ER, we called it Acute Minor Care Clinic.  There was a civilian LPN that worked the desk frequently.  When I was there towards the end of '77 we had an MD, two PAs and one or two Clinical Assistants (HM2s with clinical experience and extra training).

  • Randall, I Googled  Naymond Fontenot, There is one in Fla in Volusia County.  Here's a link, does he look familiar? There was a comment in the browser about him being a veteran.
