I just thought there should be a place anyone who served at any time at any command could go and throw out a thought, ask a question or gripe!

  • 64'-65' Med Cruise was also 3 miles out .10 a pack/$1.00 a carton..plus we had real junk food at the Ge Dunks...long before the Navy got into the HEALTH issues...I got my orders to separate  before the cruise ended...left with 10 ctns of Pall Malls in the bottom of my seabag..spent 2 wks in ROTA...caught a 727 nonstop to Philadelphia went through the terminal wasn'r asked about anything so I got to keep 10 ctns of smokes...Of course these days that would never happen

  • A buck a carton outside the three mile limit,

Home ported in Long Beach Ca. for 3 years I can remember making sea store runs never had any problems getting them off the ship

  • Not sure what they cost now....haven't had one for 2years now.  Last I remember was about $70 carton.  The case of Pall Mall I bought cost $50...that's for 50 cartons !!! what a bargin.  Of course that was back in 1962.  Didn't cost much to get cancer back then.

  • What are they now, about $6 a pack? $60 a carton!!!
  • Back then I smoked camel non filter. Ugh! Later switched to Marlborough, then got smart and switched to NONE!
Now that you remind me, your right, it was a two pack limit, one carton for the guys living off base.
Also Remember stocking up before hitting the US international limit. We bought out the ships store.
  • When we were at sea cigarettes cost $1.00 per carton.  Bought a case one time and stored them in Radio 3.  We were only allowed to take two packs at a time on liberty with us, and both packs had to be opened.  That way we couldn't sell them on the black market.  Miss those good ol days!

  • We bought cigarettes for a buck per carton, once out beyond the three mile limits.

  • In the 80's in the PI shipboard personnel were allowed to take two packs off base. People that were stationed there and lived off base probably could take a carton off base.

  • Early 70s we could buy 2 at a time, but we were not allowed to take more than 1 carton off base to make sure we were not trading or selling on the black market.
  • IN TOKYO 1950 , CIGARETTES WERE $1.00 PER CARTON LIMIT 2 CARTONS. ONE TO SMOKE AND ONE TO TRADE FOR MERCHANDISE. AFTER ADMIRAL JOY WAS TRANSFERRED WE COULD BUY HERBERT TARRINGTONS WITH NO LIMIT.

I'm wondering if we can use this forum and not have people get lost!

I have been informed by our CO, Mr Karr that these forums may work a little better than the "comments" section. So, I am going to try an experiment and see if we can do some house cleaning in this command! Excuse me! Sorry, I meant swab the deck!Somehow the comments have reversed themselves and the most recent comments show up at the end instead of the beginning. We have to be supportive of Doug these days as the site seems to be experiencing a growth spurt, which is good!
