Enlisted or not! This room is for everyone!

I just thought there should be a place anyone who served at any time at any command could go and throw out a thought, ask a question or gripe!

  • I quit smoking when I got married, but started up when I was going through my divorce.  Then I quit again when I met my present wife and haven't had a smoke in over twenty-six years.

I used to smoke pipes, cigars and cigarettes.  Don't miss it at all.  Never did chew.  Never wanted to.

  • Every so often the deck apes would go through the life rafts that were stored for if the ship sank and replace all the cigs and C rats in the kits.  The cigs were Chesterfields and were all water stained and tasted like c rap.  The old C rats were put in a box and anyone who wanted them could take them.  I got some stuff that wasn't too bad, but some of it was pretty nasty.

I worked with one guy that said it the ship was going down, he would grab a can of the foam concentrate that was used to put out oil fires.  It was made out of animal blood and he would use it to live on if he had to.   A little too macho for me, but with him, who knows.

  • That was not ham, it was spam.. and it never goes bad.. I live in a place where spam is very popular.  Me not so much anymore.. We would get a candle and light it behind a tree and put the meat (or what ever it really was, buzzard I think) and placed our helmet over "Dinner entrée" to heat it up, we had not equipment that generated heat other than the radio I carried.  Another thing that was learned real quick and that you did not smoke at night in country.. At least now where we were.  Had one guy light up and get shot from across the river.  No thanks, I could wait..\

  • That's true, no one ever bummed my camels. And I still remember packing them to tighten the tobacco but still picking pieces of tobacco from my mouth.
  • When I joined I was smoking Lucky Strikes, I soon learned that they were very popular I soon changed to Camel non filters because the free loaders would  usually bum a smoke from someone else. I quit in 1990 after a little over 40 years of smoking

  • I forgot about the little mini packs of cigarettes in the C Rats!

    what a memory!!!

Cigarettes,  chicklets, Toilet Paper, a P-38, crackers and the round candy bar, and the fruit and Entrée.

I liked the beans and franks and the spaghetti, could not stomach the ham and eggs or the chicken meat thing (boned chicken?)

we heated them on the engine exhaust manifolds (LCM-8)

  • I quit smoking in 1978, a pack was nearly 75 cents.  It was the Ides of March and I did through Acupuncture.  One treatment and never wanted another cigarette. but would have several cartons in my locker on board the ship when we came into port. Never had a question about how many packs I took off the ship.  C-rats came with Lucky Strike from 1943.. they were a bit harsh..

  • Just looked online smokes are averaging $6-7 a pack, big variances by state.
    New York they are $14.50 a pack! That's $145.00 a carton!!!
I would assume that means NY is charging $10 tax per pack. Unbelievable.
  • 5 years in Oct for me.
Congrats to all those who beat it and my heart felt hope for the rest that are working on it!
It's tough, but well worth it
  • Have not smoked in over 3 years - March 21st was the three year anniversary. Last carton that I bought was 54.10 at the AF base for benson and hedges menthol lights.

I'm wondering if we can use this forum and not have people get lost!

I have been informed by our CO, Mr Karr that these forums may work a little better than the "comments" section. So, I am going to try an experiment and see if we can do some house cleaning in this command! Excuse me! Sorry, I meant swab the deck!Somehow the comments have reversed themselves and the most recent comments show up at the end instead of the beginning. We have to be supportive of Doug these days as the site seems to be experiencing a growth spurt, which is good!
