I just thought there should be a place anyone who served at any time at any command could go and throw out a thought, ask a question or gripe!

  • According to what I am seeing on TV, these new ships they are building now will do away with all the lounging around on deck because the sailors out on deck give the ship the wrong radar "profile" and our enemies can "see" that it is a U.S. warship.

I figure if they can see us, we should be able to see them as well, but in this new world of sneaking around, I'm just glad the old rivet box I was on did her job well.

I hope our new Navy is as up to the same level of need our old one was.

  • They used the air gun on us in Boot camp in 66.  one guy moved and it was a bloody mess.  Never had a problem taking the shots, just the reaction to the flu shot.  Miss the days of sitting out on the deck and watching the stars and listening to the water pass under the ship..  Even enjoyed heavy seas, It was a great ride for 4 years.  Had my share of problems, but all in all, would not have missed it, cept maybe for the incountry time..

  • Well, James, that's the exact same way I got my shots in Boot in 1971.   THEN, when I was all set to leave for WESPAC, they discovered I didn't have a Med Record and I got ALL my shots AGAIN....

You can feel lucky all you want.

  • My ship was one of the few ( 1959) to receive  the air gun to give ALL shots with in Long Beach,Cal.We were required to get a flu shot, like it or not,and believe me,we DIDN'T like it.We were lined up on the main deck with our skivvy shirt sleeves rolled up...like cattle,of course...and walked past the Corpsman who touched the business end of the contraption to our shoulder, and pulled the trigger on the thing, and high pressure air actually separated the skin on our shoulder, while the serum was injected by high pressure air into our arm, which left an up-raised BUMP about the size of a 25 cent piece that tormented us for about two weeks.I was lucky and left in Oct.,'59 for another duty station...Never saw that or any other contraption like it again.

  • I remember when i was a kid my uncle came home during the war on the battleship Nevada, I noticed a basket by the gangway full of things wrapped in cellophane, I asked my mother what are things, she said "Oh, that is candy for the sailors". little did I know about condoms at that age. The Nevada was in dry dock in Long Beach and was being painted red to become the bulls eye for the Atomic bomb test. I Read later they missed the Nevada and hit a submarine.

  • I remember they didn't trust us to be clean, SO they made each member of the crew piss in a bottle.   I think it was a drug test.   Anyway, if you didn't piss ina bottle, you couldn't get a ticket off the ship for liberty.

Later, I see my friend standing next to a stack of boxes on the pier.  I say, "Hey, Steve...Whatcha Doin'?"

He says, "Have you ever stood guard on a stack of piss tests before?"

    True story.

  • Ready for your shot?  Now, don't move.

  • Dave, you didn't miss a thing, those guy pissing in the head kinda had the sensation of pissing hot lead.

  • No matter where we ported, there was a box of condoms when you left, you were "Encouraged" to use them.  After 80 days at see, some guys just couldn't get there quick enough.  After seeing what some guys when through, I was never in that much of a hurry to ...well let's just leave it as seeing the sights...

  • IIRC we were shown some films in BASIC...they weren't edited either...the visions kinda stuck in my mind..so that helped and I used "PROTECTION" every time...then when I got back to the ship hot shower...and checkin Pete n the boys on a daily basis

I'm wondering if we can use this forum and not have people get lost!

I have been informed by our CO, Mr Karr that these forums may work a little better than the "comments" section. So, I am going to try an experiment and see if we can do some house cleaning in this command! Excuse me! Sorry, I meant swab the deck!Somehow the comments have reversed themselves and the most recent comments show up at the end instead of the beginning. We have to be supportive of Doug these days as the site seems to be experiencing a growth spurt, which is good!
