Hello all, I'm Tony Knoch. I was on CGN-9 from Nov 93 - Apr 95. I was a DK2 at that time and one of the last to leave after decom. To be perfectly honest I was less than thrilled to be on that ship, because I had no desire to leave San Diego at that time and less desire to change homeport to Norfolk. All in all though, I enjoyed my tour and met some great people and learned from an awesome Chief. So in hindsight I was better for having spent my time on Long Beach.
I was up in Seattle a couple of years ago and took my wife on the ferry to see what is left of the Long Beach in Bremerton. Very sad! In an interesting turn of events, my son who is just graduating Sonar Technician school in Groton Connecticut has received orders to the USS Samuel Jackson, an Ohio class SSBN in Bangor, Washington, just a stones throw from the Long Beach.
I am Kevin Barry MM2. Served aboard from 1966-1970. 3 westpacs to Vietnam. Spread the word, the Long beach has been added to the Agent Orange ships list as of January 2012.. If you were aboard as the list notes, perhaps this info can be of assistance with your dealings with the VA. Best of luck.
Does anyone remember or have specific information regarding the fire we had in the incinerator and CIC sometime 1966-1968 while in Vietnam waters. Please email me with your info at :odat214@att.net. Thanks.
Steve, I got the job of painting the office pastel blue. When I got done I dressed it up with some white trim and it started looking like a nursery. So I kept going with painted toadstools on the cabinet faces and a family of ducks going across the outboard bulkhead. It was still there when I left in '77.

I left the Long Beach in June '77. I was an HM2. What division were you in?
served on cgn-9 twice, 77-80 and 87-91, loved every minute of it.
I was also at the decommissioning in 1995 at Norfolk Naval Station, I hear that she has since been scrapped.

Oh Man! I wish I could have seen that! Would have LOVED it! No, in '83 when I came aboard it was the standard light green bottom, white on top.
