It is time for memories. Arrived at Yakota AB Japan from Travis AFB in February 1969. Final destination NRRF as a CT-R . The mess hall food was remarkable. I was conditioning myself for the duty format...2-2-2 followed by 80 hours off. Two days after my arrival, boy did it snow. With that type of weather conditions, the Japanese employees could not come work. Some of us did their chores including mess duties.
I was also active as an amateur radio operator at KA2KS with that hobby as well as with the Navy Military Affiliate Radio Service. I am still active in amateur radio and licensed as an extra class. Call WA6UHA.
I remained at Kamiseya until June of 1969. I was then issued orders for the Hakata Administration Annex (Tri-service radio receiving facility) in southern Japan where I remained until my discharge of active duty in May 1970. I did take some leave in early 70 and took the train from Fukuoka Hakata back to Kamiseya to visit some friends. Back in those days there was no Shinkansen bullet trains from Hakata to Osaka. I took the Hato train and then spend time in Osaka for Expo 70 and then on to Yokohama via the Shinkansen.
Since then, I have been to Japan several times, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2015, and 2016. I visited the Hakata Annex area which is now a Marine World Park. I still haven't had a chance to visit Kamiseya. Taxis were cheep back then between NRRF and Yokohama but not now. Maybe there is a bus that runs on highway 16 that will get me there even though the original radio facility is gone. Right? There you go...what ever just came out of my head about Kamiseya. By the way, I did acquire an R-390 receiver working well and then had it refurbished and sold it... Oh well.
One other note in my early days at Kamiseya, after our first eve watch a bunch of us would hire a taxi to take us to this bar called 3 Nations in Yokohama.
After hours this business would open up a curry rice and chicken wing buffet. This was my first introduction to curry. Since then, the honeymoon is still going strong with curry rice. Sorry about writing a book here instead of leaving a brief comment.
I was Stationed here as an IS3 from 1991-1992 at FOSIF Westpac.

I was the Corpsman there from Jun 80 to July 81. Scared the hell out of the OIC when I first tested the siren in my grey ambulance. Saw a lot of cold injuries of the inner ear due to the AC in the cave.
After being in Yokosuka from 77 to 86 (Midway (OZ), CNFJ (N2) and C7F (N2) the Navy in all it's wisdom decided I was due for a change - so they spent the big bucks and transferred me to FOSIF WESTPAC in Kami Seya, JA - about 40 miles up the road in Sep of 86 - they finally moved me to Atsugi housing so the commute would be a little closer. Really enjoyed my time at FOSIF - was a day worker (command career counselor, CMAA, FIST operator (the one and only), set up ship visits for the personnel - Capt thought it would be nice to give our crew the opportunity to actually see what a ship looked like (except for the few that had their sea legs already - David Mustard - I'm talking about you). Finally left FOSIF in July of 90, but not Japan - did one more tour (USS Dubuque home ported in Sasebo) before retiring. David just incase you ever want to get a patch made of the FOSIF WESTPAC logo - here's the design (scanned off the medallion that was on my name tag.)
NCSJ Yoko '73-'77. Kami was our receiver site. I almost got sent up there but I had a crypto nec so...... I did escort AUTOSEVOCOM INSPECTION TEAMS up there once to the SECGRU SITE. I had people hovering over me the whole timebut that was standard for an ET doing AUTOSEVOCOM/STEAMVALVE work. No SI just TS.
I was at KamiSeya Receiver Site Sep1962-Dec1964, Gene Gowen was there same time, I was there when Kennedy was Assasinated, Oswald had bee stationed at Atsugi as a Marine Spook years before.
I first went to Kamiseya right out of CT"A" school in Apr 1955. I lost my clearance when I married a Japanese girl in 1957 and was moved out to the old twostory building as an RM2 and worked there until 6/58. Worked Ship/shore CW, Bub BCST, CCL, and TTY room. Great experience.
I Returned to Kamiseya in Feb 1972 and CWO2 and took over from Chief Stalkaner as the Radio Officer. I remained in this position until my retirement as a CWO3, at Kamiseya, in 1977. Remained onboard as a civilian for one year returning to the states in June of 1978.
I had just returned to Long Beach ,on the USS McKEAN DDR 784, from Westpac, and received orders to Navcomfac Yokosuka. After two days in Yoko, five of us were sent up the road to Kami Seya. NRRF. I stayed there from 1961-1963,
Great Duty, Food and Liberty. Almost convienced me to make a career out of
the Navy, but I went home and went to college....I have always had second thoughts about that...
