  • I served on the USS Mauna Kea aka The Tuna Boat 1972-1973 WESTPAC, Subic Bay, Viet Nam.

  • On board from august of 74 till april of 77, flew home from my 2nd west pac. I remember the night in march, kind of scary to hear GQ this is not a drill. I worked in the laundry and the ships store.

    Date Where Events
    March 12, 1977 Western Pacific USS MAUNA KEA loses propulsion because of a mechanical failure in the number 1 boiler while en route from Guam to Okinawa. MAUNA KEA is towed to Apra Harbor, Guam, the next day.
    First time rigged tow for real in my 29 plus years in the navy
