  • Not always transit, they put us on one when the ship was in the shipyard in overhaul, beleave me it was cleaner and less noise!!

  • Thanks guys.  I have to assume that a barracks barge is for personnel that are in a transient mode.  Do you still have to attend muster and be back on board by 2300 hrs, or what ever?  What are your duties on a barracks barge anyway?

  •    Wow, I'd totally forgotten about barracks barges, so that indicates that I never stayed on one.

I do remeber seeing them at Subic Bay during our 1972 deployment to Cubi.

  • When I first arrived in Subic, late into the night, our bus drove us to a pier that had one of those barracks barges.  We filed off and boarded the barge quietly and were shown empty bunks by the watch.  We only slept for about 4 or 5 hours, then it was lights on and time to get up.  I got dressed and went out on deck with my sea bag and got into a van that took me up to the hospital.  There I was assigned a bunk in an actual barracks, and I just fell into it and was out like a light.  Jet lag to be sure.  Any body here ever spend time on one of these barges?  The one I was on only had a single super structure and was very basic.  I have seen photos of barrack barges that have several decks and complemented with a sick bay and helipad.  After some internet searching I found this photo.  MST-3, docked in Subic Bay.  It very much resembles what we spent the night on.   Tho I can't say that it was the same one.

  • I was in & out of there many times will stationed on the USS Midway (CV-41) from Jan 80-Jan 82.  I got lucky again in 1989 when I went TAD to the USS Blue Ridge (LCC-19).  So many good times there.  This brings back memories.

Subic/Olongapo 1990-91

I'm doing some research and would appreciate feedback from those who were station dito at Cubi or SRF in 1990-91. Personally, I was there in the early 80's so much of my recollection is irrelevant for what I am looking for.  1. Bars and hotelsWhat memorable bars and hotels were around at that time? I remember a few from my time, but I'm sure they were long gone. 2. The JungleWas this still a thing in 90-91? Anyone remember bars from there? 3. SR FenceWhen did the fencing go up on the bridge…

What is in Subic and Angeles now.

I am living in Angeles City and have lived here for about 7 years. There have been many many changes BUT... It's still the same Philippines.Have not been down to Olongapo for about a year. The base is still recognizable as a former U.S. Base but it has been its all commercial now.I even have a friend of mine on the base. He is Japanese American and he runs a company making solenoids. There is almost nothing in Olongapo proper that is fun entertainment wise.Barrio Barretto still has many bars,…
