Subic/Olongapo 1990-91
I'm doing some research and would appreciate feedback from those who were station dito at Cubi or SRF in 1990-91. Personally, I was there in the early 80's so much of my recollection is irrelevant for what I am looking for. 1. Bars and hotelsWhat memorable bars and hotels were around at that time? Kevin, thanks for the updates. John
I was stationed at Cubi Pt. from '70 to '72. I was an AME-2, and worked in the parachute loft building. We had our own shop, and serviced all the squadrons with LOX. Lived in Olongapo for 2 years.
My first overseas deployment was to Cubi in 1972 with VP-4, though our crew stayed in barracks 4 on the Subic side. We were there when the Newport News was brought in after she blew up a turrent shelling targets in Viet Nam.
Had a lot more of dets and a split deployment at Cubi/Subic over the next eighteen years.
Almost managed to sink a sailboat next to the ships tied up at the seawall on Subic side in 1979.
Below should be a scanned image of a Spnaish Gate placemat, if things go well.
I worked at the Naval Magazine, MOMAG Unit 9, and was living in the barracks at Cubi when Pinatubo erupted in 1991. It's a shame the base there closed. Lot's of great memories.
