  • I was stationed at NAS Cubi Point from 1958 to 1960. Although I was attached to COMFAIRPHIL/COMFAIRSOWESTPAC I spent most of my time TAD at the NAS Base Radio.
  • I flew into Clark AFB loaded on Army Piper Club air craft flew over the jungle to Cubi point loaded on C 124 headed for Da Nang (65) returned to Subic on on a C 130 backed to loaded on a LST to Cam phn Bay (66) returned to Subic on a C 124 road the bus to Clark AFB (67) was home ported in Subic ; but didn't get much liberty made up for it many year West Pac .
  • I remember that long bus ride from Clark AFB too. I landed at Clark in the afternoon on a Boeing 707, (1969). Before that we had landed on Wake Island to refuel. Had to. Almost out of gas. While there I changed into Whites. I was also wearing Blues from Travis AFB.
The first thing I noticed at Clark was the instant humidity that rushed into the 707 when they open the doors. And I felt it on my skin as we debarked from the plane. Our school bus was painted Navy grey lol! Maybe that wasn't such a good idea considering the Huks. No mesh on the windows but we had a Filipino guard with a shotgun on board. I think there must have been maybe a dozen of us, (variety of ratings), all with orders to Subic. That was one long and sometimes bumpy ride. I some how managed to fall asleep, (jet lag catching up). It was late that night when we arrived at some perimeter gate and were boarded by armed Marines with flash lights looking us over and checking IDs. We were finally allowed through. Spent that night on some transient barracks barge at some dock. What a trip.
  • I wasn't stationed ther, but spent alot of time while on inport time. Was attached to AE's, AOE's and AFS's 71-73. HC-3 detachments doing vert-reps with ships off Vietnam. First det, we flew into Clark AFB. Couldn't get a helo ride down to Subic so had to ride a school bus down. Wire mesh over the windows had us worried. They said it will keep "Hucks" from tossing in handgernades. Bad roads and we were in our blues.(uniform of the day for San Fransisco airport.
Spent many a nite and some days in Olongapo.
  • Served with the Fleet Mail Center in Subic Bay & the Postal Annex at Cubi Point during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm in 1991. Met a lot of fine people while I was stationed there.

Subic/Olongapo 1990-91

I'm doing some research and would appreciate feedback from those who were station dito at Cubi or SRF in 1990-91. Personally, I was there in the early 80's so much of my recollection is irrelevant for what I am looking for.  1. Bars and hotelsWhat memorable bars and hotels were around at that time? I remember a few from my time, but I'm sure they were long gone. 2. The JungleWas this still a thing in 90-91? Anyone remember bars from there? 3. SR FenceWhen did the fencing go up on the bridge…

What is in Subic and Angeles now.

I am living in Angeles City and have lived here for about 7 years. There have been many many changes BUT... It's still the same Philippines.Have not been down to Olongapo for about a year. The base is still recognizable as a former U.S. Base but it has been its all commercial now.I even have a friend of mine on the base. He is Japanese American and he runs a company making solenoids. There is almost nothing in Olongapo proper that is fun entertainment wise.Barrio Barretto still has many bars,…
