For those who served at Allied Joint Force In Naples Italy on the Bagnoli/Agnano base. You may not have been stationed at Afsouth but at one of the other commands on the Bagnoli/Agnano base. If so, tell us what command and Years you served there.

  • Hi all.  Great to find this website today!  I was stationed at NSGD Naples 11/77 - 11/79 (NSA - Agnano)  I took my daughter to Naples in 2004, 2006, 2007, 2011.  It looks exactly the same!  I can't get enough of the place and still have souvenirs and tapestries up in my apartment.  There are quite a few Cinquecentos/Fiat 500's driving around here, and I'm tempted to maybe get one.  Those were the best days of my life!  Do you guys remember the "Hey Joes" outside the gates?  These were the vendors selling statues and other stuff.  Also, do you remember the Campfire Girls/prostitutes, who were on the sidewalks between NSA and AFSOUTH?  I went to the Flamingo Club all the time and a few Italian Disco's off-base.  It was great chatting!  Have a wonderful day...until next time!

  • That's it, the Flamingo Club. A group of us pooled our money and lived in a beachfront house in Licola and commuted to work. I hadn't thought about any of this in decades. Good to remember some of this.

  • John you are talking about the Flemingo Club?  I did not go their to often but I remember they had some go shows there.  I lived a long way out toward the beachs, the govt getto. Pinatamari some thing like that I can't spell.

  • Hadn't thought about her in years....yeah, Humpty Dumpty on the wall
between the Afsouth base and the exchange. On another note: how about
Italo and Erasmo in the downstairs lounge bar at the Afsouth EM Club.
    again my yrs there: 69-71
  • Hello shipmates, Anybody remember Humty dumpty?

  • I was attached to the International Motor Pool at AFSOUTH and I had the opportunity to partake of all the holidays.  We observed all holidays of NATO member countries at the time.  You could take a day off sometime and it would end up being almost a week before you had to be back at work.  It was great.  I was there about 10 yrs. before you William, but that is close enough for all things to be just about the same.

  • Ref the holidays at Afsouth, there were a lot of varieties of how people worked and what time off they got. There were day workers and shift workers. The day workersat the Afsouth site in Bagnoli got holidays off that the shift workers at the remote sites didn't. Not complaining though, it was great duty...do your job and enjoy being in Europe...not bad!

  • I was station at NSA Naples but worked up at AFSOUTH Bldg L Post Office. I remember all the holidays you guys got being at Afsouth. 1975 to 1778

  • It's great you had a local for a guide! I worked on a crew with all Italians and after a few months one of them invited me to Rome to visit his family and see the sites, meet the girls, drink etc. It was great! (ah, to be that young again!!!)

Between Naples and Bagnoli there was a hill (with the tunnels). We used to drive up that hill and then down to a dead end street that had a sealed up entrance (with one large block removed so you could slip in) of an ancient Tofatunnel that eventually lead to a secluded beach with ancient Roman baths carved into the stone. The waves would come into those baths in such a way that they would be channeled and swirl around where you sat. Forgot the name but have a photo somewhere...I think it was Grotto de Treveremeni or something. Sound familiar? I understand that now it is a commercial tourist attraction which is deemed to dangerous to allow you to climb down the cliff to the bath.

  • I've seen some of the Fiats here, they look nice, a little bigger than what we remember and the I believe the door opens differently.  Who would have believed that those little things also served as taxis in some of the cities.

We had an exchange student from Italy in our high school.  As I joined while still in school and just waiting to graduate before going active, I told him that as I was going into the Navy that I would see him in about a year or so.  It was less than a year and we got together in Rome.  Now, that was a way to see Rome and meet girls.
