  • USS TRIPOLI was my first sea command, had 10 years in when i checked on board June 1981 as an AK1.  During the 81-82 deployment i paid for it going across the equator on our way to Perth, thanks for the memories.
  • Served on board from '72-'75. Part of Operation End Sweep. Great ship, Great ship mates!
  • This ship was in my battle group while aboard the USS MOUNT VERNON LSD-39 1983-1984.
  • Murph, Thanks but I actually got the info already and have sent the request for a copy. My post was seen buy somebodies husband and I'm still not quite sure how that happened but I don't care. I have the info and appreciate your offer. Real sorry to hear about you Mom. Seems like people that are really special to us pass on close to special days like Mothers Day or some holiday. Makes those times more special as we remember them. I was in OE division as an ET. I am not on here much but hope your move is a good one and everything works out!
  • Hey Paul. Sorry it took so long to respond but I haven't been on here very much lately. My Mom passed away the day before Mothers Day and things have been crazy. I have my Shellback Certificate from the from the 79-80 cruise if you need the specifics, but it's packed as my family is moving to a new home. I will get it out to you as soon as possible. And yep, Murph was and still is the name all my friends call me. I remember your face but can't remember what Division you worked in. I of course was in AIMD with Master Chief Perkins, and Chief Williams Andrew Turner. Good to hear from you bro and as soon as I find what box it's in I'll email you the details of the Shellback Certificate.

  • Hey Murph( I'm assuming that's what everyone called you) good to hear from someone that was on board at the same time as I was. I'm hoping to find someone who had made the same westpac as I did so that I can get the date and longitude we crossed. I lost my shellback certificate and can get another one made by the same publisher, but I'd like to have the official info on it. Sounds like you made shellback on the cruise before I got there. Did you happen to know Tony Vasquez. He was an ET and a friend of mine who would have been on the same two cruises as you were.
  • I reported a board the tripoli in dec of 78, just in time for the change of command from Capt. Smith, to Capt. Hanes....... i was first put in v - 3 div. hangerbay to v- 1 div flight deck....... made 1 west-pac, oh how i miss the PI. I made alot good friends on that ship..Oh in your wondering yes i am still a wog.. I mess cranking when we crossed te line..........
  • Embarked with Admiral's staff on Tripoli in 1973 for the final phases of Operation End Sweep (Haiphong Harbor minesweeping detail). We had been on USS New Orleans, but moved to Tripoli when New Orleans was reassigned to latest Apollo space mission. Have vague recollection of "Tripoli Tiger Burgers" every night for midrats. Also, crazy captain who loved to shoot his guns...keeping us out at sea for extra days for a gun shoot when we could have been in Olongapo City where the girls were so pretty. Tripoli was a good ship. I enjoyed my time aboard.
