  • The autoclave looks a little big to me for a DE! I think I can arrange things for it to fit. But, if someone that knows agrees I will work on correcting that!

  • Well...I'm gonna need some help here! So, I am looking to my fellow Docs for input!

Despite the 30 below temps Monday morning I spent some time in sick bay on the USS Slater(DE-766). I have my work cut out for me! While it is in pretty decent shape for it's age, there's a lot missing, some things wrong and some things needing some work! I was glad to see an original "fold down" exam table there ready to be installed. The incorrect stainless table there now will go! Also out the door will go the "nylon" BP cuffs and modern steths!

3439406151?profile=originalAny ideas of what should be in there are greatly appreciated. Having not been in during WW2, I am a little bit short on accurate knowledge!

  • HM1.  Active duty 75-79, boot camp at RTC ORLANDO, Hospital Corpsman School at HSC GLAKES, served at Naval Regional Medical Center ORLANDO, and as a Reserve recruiter and activated for Desert Shield/Storm.  Naval & Marine Corps Reserve Center Madison, WI and Oshkosh, WI.  Alot of time at Naal Hospital GLAKES, but also Bethesda, Camp Pendleton, and on the USS Boulder, LST 1180.

I LOVED MY TIME AS AN HM.  Spent 32 years in EMS as EMT-Paramedic during and after service.

  • Jim, I don't remember. I graduated HCS San Diego around February '73.
  • Hey Dave Freeman! What company? Company 25A(72/73) here! Spent 30 years after as an EMT/Paramedic and as an instructor.
  • Actually, I went to San Diego. But in a way, we did pass through the same doors! After they closed San Diego they tore the place down and gave the land back to the city for a park!
Now they are going to combine all medical training in one location, Fort Sam Houston! I guess the leaders of today have forgotten or are ignoring history! Maybe they are the descendants of the same Admirals that thought it was a good idea to line up all our battleships in Pearl Harbor in 41! Shouldn't the thought of creating easier targets for terrorist or missiles be on the list? I guess we also forgot that it was the politicians that screwed up Viet Nam!
"Admiral Mullen, have you no shame sir?"
Another indication of where this is coming from is seen in the re-naming of the San Diego (Balboa) Naval Hospital after a politician(who served stateside in the Army commissary during WW2)! So much for naming ships and facilities after heroes!
  • Jim WHAT THE HELL???? Close GLakes HCS? I suspect you and I may have walked through some of those same doors. LOL, the old, white, 'temporary' buildings built for WWII before the 'new' HCS was built in 1975 or so? I did get to stay in the 'new' BEQ they built in '73, that was pretty nice. Especially the beer machine in the lobby.

Looks like we're going the same way as Canada towards having a single US Military. You wouldn't believe the amount of integration I saw in SW Asia; half the time the only ones you could tell for sure what branch they were in was the Marines.

Just cuz a person was wearing Army cammies was no guarantee they were a Soldier, could just as easily have been a Sailor or Airman. But the oddest thing I saw was Soldiers wearing a MARINE CORPS battle patch for the Battle of Fallujah. Which of course Marines don't wear at all.

I too am afraid all of the traditions of the Navy Hospital Corps will be forgotten.
  • So, now I read (wikipedia) that in 2011 they will close the last Corps School in Great Lakes and training will then be moved to "Fort Sam Houston" in TX?? That can't be right! If it is, who is making these decisions?? Navy Corpsman to be trained at an Army base?
Makes you wonder! Why were all the Navy facilities that were located next to the oceans closed for "inland" locations?? They close San Diego and keep Great Lakes open? I realize they have a big lake there! But, come on now I wonder if the decision makers ever even stepped a foot on a ship!
I remember one of the things that influenced me in Corp School was the history of those that had passed through the same doorways as I. It added to the sense of pride and tradition. Then the morons not only end the tradition, they tear down the doorways!
I am sure these idiotic processes can be traced back to politicians! Just another reason to clean house on Tuesday! The next time there is a Marine lying bleeding on the battlefield and there are not enough Corpsman around, we can tell him "sorry, they built another bridge to nowhere" or "they bought another car company"!
  • Looking for a girl that was in Great Lakes Class 83019(I Think) by the name of Edie.
  • Was discharged with aspirations of going into Law Enforcement/Paramedic, but our God above had other ideas for me.
I wound up doing another 17 years of Fire/EMS after my naval tour was finished. Over the past 6 years have been a practicing Emergency Room Nurse with side projects in the works.

Fleet Marine Force Service medal/ribbon

The Navy has yet to recognize the FMF service of thousands of Grunt Docs who have served side by side with the Marines for generations. In 1984 then Navy Secretary Lehman came out with an FMF ribbon but only for FMF service after 1984.The Navy should either recognize all of us Grunt Docs or none at all; choosing only those whose FMF service was post 1984 is a slap in the face to PRE-1984 FMF Hospital Corpsmen.FMF Ribbon service post 1984.gif
