  • Arrived in Da Nang September 1967 and was assigned to be the radioman on the LCU 1622. We were based at the Lighterage, Tien Sha Annex and made trips as far north as Cua Viet/Dong Ha on the Cua Viet River and Tan My/Hue on the Perfume River; south as far as Chu Lai and Sa Huynh (which the locals called "Gulligan's Island"). Luckily we were never fired upon, but did have a few mines go off near us when follwing the sweeps up-river in the mornings. Got stuck on a sandbar in the Cua Viet River one time that took us several hours to get off and had to spend the night in Dong Ha with 240 tons of ammo aboard. Had a few friends on the YFU 78 that blew up at the Bridge Ramp 27 Feb 1969 and also destroyed the LCU 1500 along with half of the buildings on the ramp. I was off the LCU 1622 by then and living at Camp Tien Sha.
  • Doug,
Great to have you in the group! We had quite a reunion in San Diego, that is the LCVA - Landing Craft aVeterans Association. Found out that my unit was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation. Only 40 years late in finding out! Got to cruise the harbor on an LCU. Such fun!
