  • on the exchange, it had just gone thru a re-modellng a few minths before, and if i remember right, there was a short in a fuse box for the theater that caused the fire.  All the Hydrants had frozen up and I 'think'  it was some where between december and febury, memory is really vague now, but a frien dof mine that im still in touch with was a sea bee there, Robet Dunn, and i think he was on one of the heavy machines that was vlearing the debris.

  • yep, lol, i know what u mean about him being hard to work for, I was a Sgt in charge of work center 910, there was many a morning him and I where at each others throrts.  If it helps any, he used to wokr for my Dad at NAS Whidby Island long before Sowey and i got a feeling a lot of my old man rubbed offf on em.

  • I don't remember a single thing about the Exchange burning down. Maybe James will know something about it. I just went back to through to the beginning of this thread and found some great pics that James added. It's so cool to see the place again but I'm sad that it closed. The town really thrived from the base being there. The new gate on Rte. 18 was added after I left the area so I never got to see that.

  • Hi James..... Yes that's him. He always kept his hair really short and he has a deep southern accent. He was from Kentucky I think. He never made a mistake and he was always right about everything. I think he was 6' 3". And you're right about his transferring to PA. (Willow Grove) in 79. He was my Chief there until I shipped out in April of 81. And after he left Willow Grove, he went to New Orleans and became a Detailer. I got to Sowey in 81, and a lot of the men there worked for Chief Lawson. It's cool to find some people from that time frame. I was from the Sowey area originally so it was home to me anyway. Thanks for the clarification on that. It helped me remember a few other things as far as time frames went.

  • while im thinking  of it, does anyone here remember when the escange burned down (about 78) if i remember right, was in the middle of winter, lost the whle complex including a brand new bowling alley.  If i recall right the sentry on the gate was told by the duty officeer no one on or off the base during the emergency, so when the Fire dept from off base showed up he wouldnt let them pass

  • correctio, he was transfeered in lat 1979, slight typo there smile

  • well, i got to Sowey in late 1977, Jim Lawson if this helps was a big man, about 6'3 or 6'4 (thius is for Dan Trembly) he was transferred from Sowey i think in late 1970 to some where in PA, dont remember now.  Does this ring any bells Dan?

  • I also just realized that my comments about checking your dates of Duty stations was directed to  James Livengood, because he worked for Chief Lawson also. I could possibly be wrong but I gave a lot of thought to my dates and I think I'm close to correct. So I'd love to learn more.

  • Wow Curtis. I vaguely remember you...LOL. I was at Sowey from 6-81 to 4-86. Before that I was at Willow Grove from 77 to 81, and I worked for SCPO Jim Lawson. He turned out to be my enemy from HELL! He couldnt' stand me and he let me know about it every day. For me he was the hardest man to work for even to this day. He made my life miserable daily and he enjoyed every minute of it. About 3 weeks before I was to check out of Willy's Grave and head to Sowey, he wrote me up for being late one morning, and got me put on legal hold for 2 weeks, and I had to go to Captians Mast. He tried to take the only stripe I had but it didnt' work. A personnelman told me of a trick to use to be able to defend myself the best I could, I used it and saved my stripe.  Even some of the guys I worked with wanted to know from him why he did that to me and he said that he wanted to show everyone else in the shop that he that b*lls to do it. I was the only one in several years working under him that didn't get open gangway for the last 30 days. I lost it one day after he said that, and I started venting back at him for being such a !@%##. And he started taking off his anchors and saying that we was going to take me out to the back 40,,,,LOL. His 1st Class PO got to him and told him that he didn't want to do that....LOL. SO he didn't. Check your dates because I know he came to Willow Grove from Sowey, and when I went to Sowey in 81, the impression that he left behind was STILL there.. LOL. I only spent a few weeks in the AIMD shop in Sowey before I got assigned to Security, and  stayed there until I separated in April of 86 with 10 years in. I have many horror stories of working with Chief Lawson. But at some point, he ended up going to New Orleans and working in the Detailers office (as a Master Chief of course) and head of assigning duty stations for all of us Airdales. But once assigned to Security at Sowey, I was a patrolman for 2 yeas and then was amde the 1st investigator when they changed the format of Security to work more in line with the local authorities to try to help solve a lot of issues that had been plaguing the area for years between civilian and military legal issues with Service members. It turned out to be the best duty I ever had. I was The Lead investigator and after a few months they assigned AD1 Ron Turner  to be the 2nd investigator. We worked for Chief Smith, and also the Senior Chief Shornden McCloud. He was by far the best Chief I ever worked for and I learned more from him than I had anyone in my life to this point. It was awesome duty and I loved it. I lost my Sowey Yearbook in a divorce  so I lost all the memories that I had there. But I loved Sowey and would enjoy sharing more stories if anyone else remembers more of the happenings of the time. It's so great to run across a name that I remember. I remember you slightly and it's the first time that's happened since I've been on this site. I remember Gene Hayes too and I'm so sorry to hear about his passing. Gene and I got along famously. Also Don Lord was a great friend, and I'm sure you remember the PH1 Pierce that was on Security too. She was a cool lady. I think Kathy was her first name. The base housing in Randolph was Scuantum wasn't it? In my early days there I had to drive the bus there on Sundays to pick up anyone that wanted to go to church on base, and then drive them back after.

It's so cool to hear from you and I hope to trade lots more stories of Sowey.

  • I was stationed at AIMD from March 1982-Dec-1986. Worked security 1982-1983 then to the metal shop, NDI shop. Great buddy Gene Hayes passed away back in 2009. Had great times in Sowey. Lived in those little white cottages on main drive then to Randolph base housing.
