  • Stationed at sowey from 1974-1977 at AIMD ground support ASM3

  • I was station at the NAS AIMD from 1975 till 1979. I ran the 500 Division as a 1st Class, working with some very fine sailors and Marines. I remember Dennis Gagne and Joe Mc Neil, the 2 civilians in the Sheetmetal and Hydrauics shop with a smile. When I got to Weymouth, the first winter I nearing Froze to death. Joe and Dennis laugh at and with me every day. Joe always wore a short sleeve shirt and a light wind breaker, even if it was 10 below. After 2 years, i ran the Quality Assurance Division where I make Chief, Master Chief O'Brian had me rewrite every Quality Assurance Procedures over from scratch, I cuss that Master Chief 'Under" my breath on a lots of days. But, him and the smart sailors, like John Lavery, that I had working for me taught me a lot in a short time. After a tour in Atlanta, Ga, I went to the Headquarters, Commander Naval Air System command where I used that knowledge from Master Chief O'Brian to run the Quality Assurance Desk in the Aircraft Maintenance Department.  Thanks for letting me share a few memiors of some very fine Sailors, marines, and Civilians at Weymouth. If there is some old friends out there, Give me a shout. Later.

  •  I was a active Marine stationed at SOWEY twice in my 9 1/2 years. Was with VMA-322 as a GSE and also as a A4 Plane Captain. Many good times there and spent some great times in the E-Club on Friday and Saturday nights. Can't believe that its closed.I miss all my freinds both Marine and Navy.

  • WAS STAIONED AT SOWEY 66 TO LATE 68. ATTACHED TO GCA 48. MET MY AT THE EM CLUB AND WAS PROMOTED TO E6 WHILE AT SOWEY

  • I was stationed at NAS South Weymouth for 3 -1/2 years from Sep 69 to May '73.  I was the Maint Chief at the GCA unit.  Eventually I was the LCPO for both Ground Elec and GCA.

Any one that was there in the early 70s, let's share sea stories.

  • Sounds like your standing a bunch of Mid Watches working all night Dan! I can't picture Chief Lawson. I stayed most of the time in the shop and never got out much. Now I do remember the news media at the front of the admin bldg. with all those telescoping cameras. Couple of guys in my shop and VP-92 were smuggling drugs from oversees. This guy in my shop was white as a ghost when I told him of it. I said whats the matter? He said I am in the middle of it. I said middle of what? He said he was the middleman and I said OH SH??! His name was John Coke, Go figure. I guess you remember Dave Price, Chief Hepler, PO1 Lewellyn, Mr. Gagne, Cant remember the Hydraulic civilian and of course Larry Piller the machinist. As for Willow grove I use to hang out with a bunch of guys playing SoftBall for the base. Had to go to XO mast at VP-66 because I got drunk and couldn't make it to watch. Oh well that wasnt fun at all. I did end up retiring as AFCM so I must have done something right.

  • Heading off to bed here. I worked overnight and just got home when we started this convo. It's great to meet you and I love remembering the old times. I'll check back later when I get up. Have a great day James and talk soon.   Dan

  • You're right. I have a LOT of great memories of both Sowey and Willow Grove. It's easy to remember the bad times, but remembering them always help you to remember the good times too. And maybe Chief Lawson will turn up here someday. He always WAS full of surprises. I also just remembered that he bought a brand new car for his wife while in Willow Grove. It was a 1980 Ford Fairmont....LOL. He was SO thrify that he wouldn't even take a model with a radio in it because he didn't want to pay for it...LOL. If anything added to the price of the car, he didn't want it. At the same time, I was looking at buying an old 1948 Desoto for $75, I swear that once he found out that I wanted to buy it and restore it. HE ran right over there and bought it first...LOL. Then he'd bring it in the shop at night and want ME to help him work on restoring it. LMAO.

  • u2, its great to reminese about some of the better years and memories and who knows, maybe the Chief will turn up here, although i cant imagine him ever using a computer,
