  • These are great pics Jim!!! Thanks for sharing them. They sure do bring back great memories. I STILL can't believe that they closed the base. I don't think I'll ever get used to that. I think they made a huge mistake.
    Thanks Jim
  • ROFL, I wonder if you saw any of us "flying" by on our shoes down Shea Dr., LOL. That's so cool to hear. It's a small world that's for sure. I was the lead investigator while i was there, and sadly, i was the one that found the body the Lt. that passed away in his room. One of your counterparts, (maybe it was even you), noticed a putrid smell in the hallway and I had to find the source. NOT a pretty site. He hadn't been seen in 3 days so I had to enter the room. Anyway, there was a LOT of great memories of SOWEY, and now I"m tweeking the brain trying to remember a lot more about the place...LOL. It's great to hear from you Jim.

  • I was on duty at the BOQ the day that hurricane went through.
  • That's so cool to hear about Lyra Drive again. I patrolled that area all the time and had numerous friends that lived there. I lived off base, but the housing on SOWEY was some of the best that I had seen on the bases that I had been assigned too. In 85 when we had a hurricane pass through, all of us on duty at Security went out onto Shea Drive, opened our jackets like a parachute and skidded down the road at about 40 mph...LOL. THAT was a blast. LOL.
  • I was lucky. I lived in Base Housing right there on Lyra Drive. It was a short walk to work for me when I was at the BOQ and not much further when I worked in The Galley.
  • I was assigned to HSL-74 as my parent command and was sent TAD to AIMD. Worked in the hydraulic shop and the tire shop. Lived in the military housing at Cape Cod Ma was a long drive to the base, but i survived the drive, enjoyed the time that i was there.
  • It's great to see this page up. I was at Sowey for 6 years and loved every minute of it. I was attached to the Security Police Command the entire time that I was there. Definitely great duty. If anyone can share some pics of the station I would love to find some. Over the years, I've lost ALL of the pics that I had.
I hope that everyone else that was stationed here has as good of an experience there as I did. I spend a lot of time reminiscing about some of those special events there, like the Blue Angels Air Shows. Being a part of Security during an air show is quite a great experience.
