  • Bangkok, yes, was our first R&R port in '68 (for me anyway) after leaving Vietnam!  We had members of the Thai navy come aboard and offer to give us tours of the town. Of course they took us to pre-arranged shopping stops along the way, including complimentary beer that had to be 10% alcohol. I still have my blue star sapphire ring. They really did take us to see some of the sites around the area, and even took us home to see the "fighting fish".

Weren't those girls in the hotels handy? All you had to do was look through the window at the girls watching TV and pick a number, then let the front desk know your choice!

One bad memory of Bangkok was the loss of one of our crew. He fell in the hotel pool after midnight and was too drunk to make his way out with nobody around.

  • It was good liberty Chief, but the only place I ever had to pay to dance with one of the girls in the bar.  I also remember the traffic in the streets.  Looked like an ant hill working.  Scared me to death at first...

  • I missed Bankok, the Truxtun was there in 1980 - I reported onboard at Pearl Harbor - she was on her way home from deployment. The skuttlebut was that was one fine liberty port.

  • Did any of you guys ever go to Bangkok Thailand?  I was there in '60 for a few days and really enjoyed it.  They had a Coca Cola plant there and a big compound for the American employees.  They invited us to come to their compound for food and drinks . I was there with DESRON 13 and they told us we were the only US ships that had been there in about ten years. They were glad to see some more Americans and really showed us a good time...

  • The last time I was there in 88 the exchange rate was 30 some pesos to the dollar, the beer was less than a buck a bottle.

  • Had many a Sam Magoo at the American Legion in Olongapo back in 62-66. Believe the cost was 10 Centovos. Out in town beer was something like 50 Centovos.

  • Hi Tim, Ya I agree, Lots of great places I visited too and always glad to be back home. Thought some of the others might enjoy the Port of Calls I was doing and after looking at some of the Ports I visited, things sure have changed.
