  • The whole, entire thing about retiring is this - you set yourself a "goal", and then you go for it. I never intended to retire from the Navy, that was the furthest thing from my mind.I went in in 52, did a minority cruise (3 years) and got out in 55. My dad and I went horse tradin' one Saturday morning, and he asked me what I intended to with the rest of my life. When I hedged, he told me that I was dumb, that I already had three years in, and only 17 left to do on 20. I went back in and stayed. I thank that old man every day. I retired in 73, and I've never regretted a day of it.
  • welcome aboard Cheif! My late husband was CWO3 James Paul Long. I have signed up to feel closer & learn a bit about his military life as he was already TDRL when we met.
  • Hey "Hook", that same airman was probably stuck on mail buoy watch for a while to. It seems they had that one going frequently on the JFK.
  • Glad to be here! I have a recruit at RTC Great Lakes. He is just finishing week three today. I have two letters from him. He sounds like he is still in Oh, crap! mode. LOL He has suddenly taken to calling me Chief, instead of dad or sometimes even my first name. VBG(very big grin). I hope one day her will join this group also.
  • I think there's an airman still hunting for military bearing grease ;)
  • Congrats on your retirement CS1. My final tour was as the CMC of the KAUFFMAN FFG-59 and I know how tough it was for Supply Dept, especially the CS folks. On a frigate if you wanted something done you had to look in the mirror because that's who was going to do it
  • I joined in October of 1986 started out as a MSSR after completing boot camp in Great Lakes not realizing what my future had in store for me I ended up doing a total of 7 Deployments, 4 drydocks, 2 homeport changes and 2 shore duty billets in all that time. I ended up retiring as a CS1(SW) and in all that time I have made alot of good friends and have alot of fond memories. The Navy has been good to me and I am proud to be apart of this elite group, you have to be a strong and dedicated person and have a real opened mind to be a retiree because not everyone can achieve this goal especially in my rate if you only knew the things I had to go through and wake up to, to get were I am today. I don't regret it one bit, I have a great wife and stepson who spent the last five years of my career with me it was very tough for her but she did it and I am proud of her. I retired on board the USS Taylor FFG-50 out of Mayport FL in 2006

One Huge Event

Greetings fellow Navy retirees! I served for twenty five years, and have told many sea stories. I like to categorize them just a little by putting them into Liberty wild tale type things, and Operations this is what happened on an exercise or evolution type thing. Do you have a really BIG EVENT that was very cool or maybe not so cool that you would like to tell the rest of us old salts?
