  • Bill, Guess if I had read your whole profile I would know how long you were in, please disregard my question.  I got out has a 2nd Class.  Ron

  • Bill, See my comment below.  Both my uncles served on the Prairie at the same time during WW II.  More in common.  How long were you in?  I did four active and six in the reserve's (TAR) but got out for a job with the city.

  • Arrived on board October 84. Promoted to Senior Chief in 86 and transferred to Subic Bay.
  • Retired off Prairie June 1985, OM1(SW)
  • I was onboard Prairie 59-61. Worked in the boat shop as an EN3. Made two WESPAC cruises. Lot of good memories, good friends
    and a great experience.
  • I was stationed on the oldest & best from 82-85. My brother and i got on in San Diego and then changed homeports to Long Beach. We made a West-Pac on her and E-5. We were both MR's in the Machine shop and stayed onboard 3 years before leaving for Dive school. No doubt the best command we ever had. Those were some great times, great people, and a great ship.

  • I never served aboard the Prairie AD-15 but I had two Uncles that did during WW II. Thomas Jones was a Chief Store Keeper but may not have made Chief when he was aboard. William "Bill Jones was a 1/c Pharmacists Mate who got out went to College and opened A Drug Store in TN. I was a Tin Can Sailor out of Mayport Fl our AD was the Yellowstone.
  • Greetings Shipmates. I was on Prairie from 76-79. During that time, I grew up so much. I working in the optical shop on the main deck just aft of the quarterdeck. We had so much fun in there along with all of the precise work that had to be done. I went on 2 Westpacs and one shakedown cruise to Mazatlan. My best friend on the Prairie was Mike Osborn, who I have since lost track of and wish to meet up with again if someone knows of him please contact me at jnielsen30@yahoo.com. I would love to hear from any of my old shipmates.
  • Hi shipmates! I was a ship's crew IC-man on Prairie from 1980 thru 1982. I was the LPO most of that time. Ported in San Diego except in the yards in Long Beach at the end of my time on board. I was there when the first women were assigned to the ship. I made one West Pac. I left the ship at the end of 1982 for Officer Candidate School where I made E-6 before graduating. I got out of the Navy as an O-3E. Lots of great shipmates, few if any of which I have found anywhere on the Internet! What is the deal with that? Frank Sanchez, Torres, Hinley, etc. We had a great Chief Engineer (Lt. O'Brian) and E-division Officer.

Politics

I am a political junkie. The years that I served aboard Prairie, we had probably the worst President ever but now I am not sure about that. We may have a tie with Carter and Obama. I just hate the way Obama is acting in office. He is playing the Chicago Style politcal games without the baseball bat. If you don't like someone or something that someone has done, you just smash them down. Case in point is the Medical products manufacturers. They didn't go along with the socialized medicene that…
