  • I was stationed at Centerville Beach from Feb. 1969 to June 1969. I served with Rm3 Rich Schilling and RM3 Nash Lorino and a bunch of others. I had a great time there and would like to heard from them and others. Larry Long. L1long1fst@verizon.net

  • I was an ET stationed at Centerville Beach from August 1982 to February 1984.  It was my first command and I had such a wonderful time there.  My ex and I lived in the Gingerbread House in Ferndale for a while before moving to Fortuna.  The people I remember most are Colette Veine, Jay Johns, Steve Morgan and Jeff Gareri.

  • I was stationed at navfac from 1962 until about Mid 1964, I arrived as a RM  seaman, and left as a RM2 I worked in the E bulding, with the sonar guys. Names that I recall are, Terry asher, Dick seaward, Hug, Molnar, Dino, Chiefs Sizemore, and Churchill. Have many good memories of my time stationed there

  •  Centerville from 1973 to 1975.  Just found this group.  I remember that 6.9 quake.  My wife had moved home because I was due to be transferred overseas for a year and I was sleeping in the barracks.  I woke up and the room was empty.  I was PO'd because I thought I had overslept so I got dressed and went outside to head for mess and everyone was standing in the parking lot in blankets or sheets.  I had slept through the whole thing.  Beer may or may not have been involved.

I also remember telling the FNG's to ask the Lt. Lady on watch for several feet of fallopian tubing for the chart recorders.  Still get a smile out of that.

Hi to Stephen Gilbertson.  I can't believe you remember me.  My memory is not as good as yours, but Mike Bean rang a bell.  Hope all is well with you.

  • I remember we used to put about 6 guys in a car and drive to Petrolia for a dance on Sat. nights. Too much beer, of course. The scary part was waking up in the early AM and seeing where we had tried to pull off the road to sleep. Remember those hills and those roads! God watched over us I guess.
  • I was stationed at Centerville Beach from July 1968 to March 1970. I was a communication watch supervisor (RM). I lived in the barracks for a while then moved into an apartment in Ferndale. Just recently I have been in contact with two RMs I was station with, I was station there when 4 STs and 1 Rm who where renting a house in Ferndale and got busted for having and smoking marijuana. Only only one was discharged from the Navy the others where allowed to stay in the Navy. Those were different days. A navy friend of mine has a son who now teaches grad school in Ferndale. I enjoyed my time there. I  retired from the navy as a senior chief radioman. Rich Schilling
  • Hello to all out there that were at Centerville Beach. I was there from December, 1960 until January, 1964. I was an SOO 3rd class Petty Officer, schooled in Keywest, Fl. I think there were approximately 80 men (no women at that point) during my stay. We had some great beach parties and made the walk to Ferndale and back numerous times. Usually carrying a case of beverage to keep us entertained. It wasn't a bad place to be during those times. I remember going to school in Keywest and wondering why there were so many Vietnamese sailors there! I was on watch when the message came across that President Kennedy was killed. I think I still have a copy of that message somewhere.
  • Hello All,

I was an ET1 working with the radiomen as a Comm/Crypto tech from 1973 to 1976. I lived on the base first in the old barracks then moved when they built the new one. I remember Ferndale and Fortuna and tipped a beer or two at "The Spot" ( you could get a pizza there too ) anyway lots of memories. The main people I remember are "Dutch Schultz", John Girsch, Mike Bean and Steve Bezanson.
  • Hi Danny,
I believe the RMC was Newburn, but that was when I was first allowed to the watch floor during my conversion. A little later I recall a Chief Hamil poking around the floor, but I don't know if he was an RM. Also, (again) I don't recall a name, but there was an African American RM3 or 2 there that was also planning to convert to OT. I just don't remember his name. We're talking 30+ years ago, and I'm surprised I remember THIS much! (LOL). Talk with you later. Earnie
  • I was there after a year on the USS Goldsborough DDG-20 and then going to RM-B School. I was a Radioman third when I got there and a Second CLass when I left. I lived in a trailer outside Ferndale then moved into Navy housing. I was on the softball team for awhile. Tried my hand at slow pitch. Do you remember any of the Radiomen that were stationed there? I got in touch with David Whitworth who was an RM2 when we were there. I can't remember who the Radio chiefs were then.
