  • Yeah I remember the PT-but all I remember was the run. What else did we have to do. Thanks for the info on the site to check out. I have had some success on a site called navysite.de- in fact when I told you the other day that I had been in Long Beach I actually had gone down to meet up with a friend off my first ship (the Jones) that I hadn't seen in 28 years. I found him on the site I just mentioned. I didn't see anything about SIMA there, just the ships I had been on.
  • Try also this site to see if you can fine any of your former shipmate's http://navy.togetherweserved.com/usn/servlet/tws.webapp.WebApp?cmd=...
  • I remember those and also the PFT's (Phyiscal Fitness Testing) once a year.
  • Also to answer a question you gave awhile back-Yes I do remember the party's and cookouts. Yum!! Ribs, hamburgers, hot dogs. Pretty decent selection for us. I also remember the physical activities competition that was scheduled, the different divisions competed against each other in things like tug of war, arm wrestling, and other sporting type events. Do you remember those??
  • Well including me there are apparently only 4 members for this site.( At least that is what I think it says. ) If that's true then you were pretty lucky to find even one person that you knew from back then, and even I was there for part of the time you were. I haven't been able to find the sites to some of my other commands I've been attached to, such as the Jones, the Puller ASW base in San Diego. At least not here on this Navy Veterans site. Jeff
  • I know I joined to see if I could find any of my shipmates and sofar only one Brian Babcock has joined. We were both at Sima at the same time and worked in the lagging shop till I transfered to the pump shop and Brian went to the Boiler Shop.
  • I left in late Nov. of 1987-I also reenlisted there. I still live in California so I was down in Long Beach a couple weeks ago. Even though I know the shipyard closed in 1997,it was a shame to see it being used liked a storage area. I spent alot of my time in the Navy at the shipyard. My first ship the Uss John Paul Jones DDG-32 was in drydocks there from summer 1980 to early 1982. And both of my other ships (Uss Lewis B. Puller FFG-23 and Uss Sides FFG-14) spent time at Long Beach while I was on board them. Including my time at Sima I was at the Naval Station/shipyard a long time.I'm surprised more people haven't signed onto this site, but then I just found out about it the other day. Jeff

  • Yeah- I think alot of the different departments (such as yours) had their own vehicles. I mainly picked up people that had been in my division before my injury. Our guys just went to the reserve ships to do alot of their pms. So I mainly picked up the sonar techs and ft's and gunners mate, but if anyone needed a ride or needed to be picked up on my rounds, of course I would it. When were you at Sima?
  • We used ford econoline van's to go to the pier's if we have a heavy work load on a ship. Worked mostly at pier 15 & 16 and also over at dry dock 1 when I was in the Lagging Shop 57 A
