  • In 1963 when ComFairSanDiego went by the wayside was transferred as ships company to NAS North Island Communications as an E-5 watch supvr.

  • Thats San Diego for you. I went surfing all year round. We used to go by the pier in Imperial Beach. In later years in Ocean Side. The only time I was stationed with anyone I knew was in Millington Tenn. at A school. There were only about 10 or 12 enlisted guys in my unit. There were more officers not counting all the students who were all pilots.

  • Four of us from boot camp went to this outfit. We were all from the NY/NJ area and went swimming at the base pool on Christmas day 1965. We were the only people at the pool. The life guard thought we were nuts.

  • Oh. Bad grammer.

  • I remember that squadron name but nothing else. I was rather sheltered and was only on base for work or duty. I do vividly remember the day Kennedy was shot. I had duty that day and walked a post along the bay by the old sea plane hangers. The security was sure heightened. By the way, remember falling in for JFK's and going to the ge-dunk for snacks or a fried spam and cheese sandwich. If thats how it is ge-dunk is spelled.

  • By the way that was in 1965

  • This was my first command after boot camp. Anyone on this site every hear of VRF-32? It was  a transport squadron that ferried planes to other stations.

  • I was at North Island From Oct. 1963 to Sept. 1966. FAETUPAC. Most of the time I lived in National City. Drove the Strand most every day.

  • Recieved my E2-C training at NI as a Mech.
  • Retired DOD civilian E2/C2 program.

Tad at North Island

I was station TAD at te North Island October of 1962 till June of 1963. Was assigned as a compartment cleaner by the mess hall, until my Pattern Making School started in June. Right after arriving there while in waiting to be assigned to that, the Cuba Missile Crisis hits. I spend one long day down at the docks, while they loaded Marines and an aircraft carrier. I was at a gate and some clown forgot about me and I was there till late at night. No food and I would sneak between two cars to…
