Tad at North Island

I was station TAD at te North Island October of 1962 till June of 1963. Was assigned as a compartment cleaner by the mess hall, until my Pattern Making School started in June. Right after arriving there while in waiting to be assigned to that, the Cuba Missile Crisis hits. I spend one long day down at the docks, while they loaded Marines and an aircraft carrier. I was at a gate and some clown forgot about me and I was there till late at night. No food and I would sneak between two cars to relieve myself. Finally, a Lt. came back by and asked how long I have been there. I told him and he blew his cork and came back with a replacement. The next day I was given two days leave and some extra pay because of this. I was young and couldn't believe it. Afte being assigned to compartment cleaning, which was pretty much morning only activity, we would go over to Personel building and watch films. Alot like victory at sea, south Pacific battles aboard ship, etc. Interesting stuff. I like my assignment there and like the ferry ride back and forth to San Diego. Good memories, except for the jet noises, man they were loud. Is the base still open?

  • yes the base is still open but when i was there, there was no ferry to ride just the bridge or the silver strand, and if you drove across the bidge you needed to get to work early because of the traffic, the bridge was a toll bridge and when there were 3 carrier in then the traffic was even worse,
i was stationed at HSL-31 from 1988-1991 that was my last shore command, and yes they still have jets, helos and ships.
