  • I was attached to The Gilmore from 1997-1980 when she was Returned to the states for Decommishing

  • - I came aboard Dec. 1974 - 75. After compartment cleaner and mess hall, I became Coxswain of the OMB ( officer motor boat ). On  R&R trip to Nice or Malaga I had mid watch an somebody tossed Oscar overboard. They dropped crew and I into the dark ocean that night in one of the whaler boats.Had to go get Oscar. Are paths have surely crossed as every chance I had, I would invite enlisted to ride in front compartment of my OMB back to ship. Picked up " Pistol " Pete Marivich once for USO show at the gym. I remember some belly dancers to. And who could forget the beer hall ?  Those sub guys were crazy as hell. Where any of you in Rota Spain when Franco died ? That might have been aboard the Kennedy CV-67 a year later. Remember Martha ? We all fell in Love with her. I also rode a mo-ped that I traded a carton of Marlboro's for. Anybody been to Olbia lately ?

  • IM1 - Rode her from Key West to La Maddalena. 73-75 (?)

  • I was an HT2 in DC shop, (73/74)

  • PM3 Gene Young, reported for duty April 1976 as the ship returned from Nice, France. Departed @April 1977. Anybody from that time period onboard? Served under PMC Gerald Moerke, Ltjg Hortsmyer R-1 Divison Pattermaker/Carpenter/Lagging Locker. Oh, how I detest boat beading and white lead. Made many plague backs for every boat that came along side.

  • I arrived on board in 79 and crossdecked to the Orion when it arrived. LaMadd was a good tour if you had family with you. Made chief on the Gilmore.
  • Reported on board Jan. 1,1972 and left in 1974.. Worked out of the Shipfitter Shop 11-A..wish that the old Gal was still around..
  • I joined the Gilmore in Sept. 1958 in Key West,FL. Was assigned to E Div, ship's company and worked mostly in the power shop. I don't think there is a space on that ship that I have not been in doing a variety of electrical repairs. Seperated in May, 1962 as a PO2/c.
  • Ahoy Shipmates. The local Amvets base has come up with a Bronze USS Gilmore placque, that was bought in a yard sale. Is about 3.5 pounds.
If interested email me and I will send a picture. Make check payable to Amvets Post 101 for $25.00
  • Served aboard as EN2 in 1971 M&A Division

I went aboard in Key West, thru the overhaul, Charleston Missile Load Out, across the pond to Sardinia. 72-75. Enjoyed the life, times, and the Italians in Santa Theresa di Galura.
