USS ORION was the sixth FULTON - class submarine tender and the second ship in the Navy to bear the name. After almost exactly 50 years of service, the ORION was both decommissioned and stricken from the Navy list on September 3, 1993.

  • The ORION was my first ship. 1984 to 1986. This was a great start to my navy days.

  • I was stationed on the USS Orion in 1993 to ride it back from La Maddalena Italy for decommissioning.  I was a DC-man assigned as an oil wiper with a lot of good people including now Masterchief DC-man Orlin Volmer.

  • Crossdecked from the Gilmore to the Orion in 1980  when she came to relieve the Gilmore. My family and I really enjoyed that tour and was sad to leave.
  • I joined the US Navy 01/24/1991 the USS Orion AS-18 was my first ship. I meet her in along side the USS Belknap gieattia Italy. Then we returned home port to Sardinia la maddelena Italy. Until 1993 when the USS Simon Lakes took our place and the USS Orion crossed over to our new home port in Norfolk VA awaiting to be decomission.
  • The Orion was my third tender after the USS PRAIRIE and USS HOLLAND. My brother and i served onboard while she was in La Madd during Desert Sheild and Desert Storm (around 93-95). Great group of guys onboard and living in Italy was an awesome experience.
  • Hello ... I was stationed on the Orion from December 1974 through April 1, 1975 and worked in R-5 Division.  Recently married, my wife came on board during the weekend while I was on duty.  The Captain apparently was on board before she arrived, but left shortly after she came on board. I almost died laughing when they announced "Orion departing" and she got all flustered thinking that the ship was going out to sea.
  • I was on Orion from may 63- feb 66 I after 6 mo. of mess cook duty in chiefs mess I worked in the foundry, spent my entire tour of duty on orion, left as ML3, am looking for a couple of buddys, moulder K T Ross, storekeeper Willy Driggs, lots of good memories on that ship
