USS Enterprise (CVN-65), formerly CVA(N)-65, is the world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and the eighth US naval vessel to bear the name. Like her predecessor of World War II fame, she is nicknamed the "Big E".

  • During the 88 West Pac the medical officer and myself were sent from the Truxtun to do a radiation health audit. That only took about three or four hours, took us four days to get back to the Truxtun - since they decided to send her out of helo range. One of the squadron career counselors got me down on the hangar deck and I got to see the inside of a Tom Cat.

    Too bad they could not find a place to moor her and turn her into a museum. It is a crying shame they are taking her apart piece by piece.

  • I was in the first crew and a plank owner of the Big E. Assigned to her while still in Newport News August 1961. Plank owner plaque, which still hangs on my den wall, shows 25 November 1961 as commission date. First assignment was Aviation Guided Missile crew. Did shakedown cruise to Cuba, First Med cruise, Cuban Missile blockade Oct. 1962, second Med Cruise 1963.
  • Those signal flags.  Old grainy slide of me on flight deck somewhere at sea 1971.  Kinda wondering if anyone can translate those flags on the Island.  If you can make them out.

  • I was on the Big-E while attached to VF-2. during 74-75 westpac. Had a good time and miss most of the people I met. From what I can read it might have been the last time it was CVAN insted of CVN.

  • I was on the Big E from 1974 to 1977. Made 2 west pac's . I was in 2nd division. And oh yeah subic bay. Any one drink any major. Those were some of the best days of my life.
  • I made two cruises on the Big E.  82 and 84 in VAW-117.  Remember sitting on the bow on no fly days, with my feet hanging over the edge, listening to my walkman and dreaming of what lay ahead.  She was a great ship!  She was my home.  She took me to Hawaii, Japan, Singapore, Africa, P.I., Austrailia, Hong Kong!  Best time of my life!  I will miss her.

    Christmas day, 1971.  I was airlifted off the Big E in a CH-46  Sea Knight helicopter.  Landed on a nearby ship, which would be the beginning of my discharge, and final trip home.

  • I was in sept. 75 to 79. They flew me out to the ship on a mail plane, it was doing flight ops out of Alameda. That was quite exciting landing on her deck. I was an IC man. Took care of the phones, alarms and warnings, gyro compass, mc's etc.

    Made 2 WestPacs, am a ShellBack, and I also got out while ship was in dry dock in Bremerton. Does any body remember when we bombed one of our own fleet tugs? They were practicing on a drone that the tug had pulled out and the jets would come in shooting and drop 500lb bombs then a spotter copter would come in and do a visual then the jets would do it again. Well one time after the visual the drone sank after the copter gave the ok to attack again and then the drone sank quickly and I guess the only thing the pilots had on their radar then was the tug. The 1st bomb hit the water next to the tug, exploded  and shrapnel ripped down the side of the tug, every one diving for cover, the 2nd bomb punched a perfectly round hole through the mast then hit the water and exploded...more shrapnel, the 3rd bomb hit the hull number in the bow and didn't go off!! Heard it lodged outside the chief's quarters. It was listing pretty good, we had to send a demolition team off the Big E over to disarm it. They had to tow it back to San Diego. Had a lot of fun in the P.I.  Olongapo, what a place. I also went to Hobart Tasmania, nice place. It's the only port we wore our dress blues off the boat. It was like wearing a neon sign that said American Sailor Lets Party!! Dont know if I ever had to buy my own drinks at the Carlisle Hotel, every one wanted to buy them for us. Was in a couple of typhoons that got pretty hairy. Had waves breaking over the bow and going all the way back hitting the island!! tore some shit up! Well that's it for now, I'll see if anyone responds back that might remember this stuff.. IC2 Broyles.

Plan Of The Day

Anybody know where I can view some old Plans Of The Day from the Big E from 1971?  Or if some of you who served on her from that time, might have some old ones that you can scan and post?  It would be awesome to see those again.  Historical too.  Thanks!

Indian Ocean

 We were near India after being ordered there from Tonkin Gulf.  A Russian warship had been tailing us for sometime and one day it huffed and puffed up along side us.  We all waved and checked each other out.  Excuse the ancient photo.  Its an old slide.  WESPAC of 1971.

Back Then

I remember when I was on the Big E, (1971-72), some where in the South China Sea, maybe the Gulf Of Tonkin, that a Huey gun ship landed on our flight deck with a wounded gunner. I assisted the Chief Of Surgery that night in removing small bits of shrapnel from this gunner's legs. His surgery was successful and he recovered well in Sick Bay with both legs intact and functional in spite of his wounds. And later was air evac back to the PI for continued therapy.
