  • NAS GTMO, McCalla Field aircract maintenance division, Jan. '64-Dec. '64. The Desal plant was started that year, outfit called Burns&Rowe was the contractor, many beers at their civilian club. EM clubs closed at 1900 hrs. B&R was open all night. McCalla rield is closed now, I suppose, Leeward Point is still open. Remember a SAR mission when VU-10 lost one of their Crusaders. Feeding french fries to the iguanas at the cliffiside club accross the runway from the hanger. NEGDEF exercises once a month, carried a .30 caliber machine gun & a .45, had to qualify with both. Would have shipped over if I could have stayed in Cuba, great place to do duty. Anyone else there in '64?
  • July 1973-July 1975........... I was stationed on the NAS side on the fuel farm
  • Good Gitmo been there, got drunk there.
  • When I was stationed there we had DEFEX once a month, fun, fun, fun!!!. Lived on the Naval Air Station side and my fav sport was deep-sea fishing from 6pm-6am, freezer was constantly stocked with shark, yum, yum. Culture shock once returned to the "states" to find the price for seafood.
  • Hi George Cowan. You may want to join our Guantanamo Bay Assn. Check out our website at www.gitmobay.org.

  • while I WAS STATION THERE I LEFT ONLY 1 TIME TO GO HOME FOR 2WEEKS AND THE REST OF THE TIME WE WORKED 10 DAYS ON AND 1 OFF, AS WE WERE THE BAD BOYS OF GTMO AT THE FERRY PIER. WE USED TO REBUILD ALL OUR ENGINES DO ALL O THE INSPECTIONS ON THE BOATS AS THE BOAT SHED WANTED NOTHING TO DO WITH US. BUT WE WERE A GREAT BUNCH OF SHIPMATES AND COULD FIX ANYTHING.
  • Welcome William Towne. Yes, in many ways, Guantanamo Bay was beautiful. However, you have to remember that those of us who were stationed there were only permitted infrequent liberty trips to nearby islands. In two years at GTMO, I was able to leave the base for a total of 4 weekends. Many more days were spent in the boondocks guarding the fenceline.
  • Hi to all! I was stationed at GTMO (not "Gitmo" as the news would have you believe) right out of PC "A" School at Bainbridge, MD in October of '66. I was assigned to the mainside post office under PCC Tom Bokowski and then PC1 Jack Spellman. After a couple of months the Chief, in his infinite wisdom, assigned me to the Leeward Point post office (in the hangar) where, along with then PC3 Jim Aust, I had a thoroughly enjoyable tour! The airdales at Leeward had better barracks and a better chow hall!. I lost count of the number of C-130s we loaded and unloaded. Left in October '67 with orders to USS SHASTA (AE-6) in Norfolk, made a training cruise to....GTMO and then a Med cruise, and finally, in November of '68 USS MAZAMA (AE-9) out of Davisville, RI and was on board for her final cruise which was a Westpac. Got out in Januacy '70 as a PC2
  • Garland, you and I spoke during the Gettysburg reunion, about our being in GTMO at the same time. I don't remember NEGDEF and the Barrel Club coming up in the conversation. I was in a light 30 caliber machine gun crew in NEGDEF and also frequented the old Barrell Club. Have you spoken with Bud Farmer recently? Keep in touch.

Gitmo, 1968-1969

I arrived here from Norfolk in January of 1968 and departed in August of 1969. I was a commissaryman 3rd class petty officer (cook) at Bay Hill Galley. When working the steam kettles I often had a wet towel around my neck to help stay cool. I lived in a separate barracks across from the galley for all the cooks called the “cook shack.” We had a small patio behind the barracks where we sat in the evenings and told stories and sang country music. Being a cook had some advantages as we could go…

My Time in GTMO

I was in GTMO from April 1969 to April 1970. I worked at the O2 N2 generating plant that was adjacent to the Fuel Farm on Leeward Point. We didn't live in the barracks, we stayed in a Quonset hut right at the site. We worked for Chief Charlie Sullivan. Looking back I would say the time spent there was pretty enjoyable
