"Robert, I remember a fire in the hammerhead cab caused by a main motor shorting out. Ono, the honcho of the Japanese contractors crawled out on a scaffold under the cab that was hanging by some safety wire. I then had to haul my ass onto the…"
"I remember Phil Beckwith, Robert Harris, and Ernst Donnell well since I was on Azuma from late 65 to mid 67. As a TM in MN-land I did the coxswain, exploder shop, hammer head crane, and any other crap duties as assigned ( there were too many to…"
I was also on coxswain duty and we pulled up to NOF. One of the guys fell off wearing the wool winter great coat. He must have gain 40 # of water before we got him aboard the Mic boat.
Then there was the time we went over to pick up a Mic boat from NOF. We were running along with it and heard yelling from it. Smoke was coming out of the vents. The guy operating it grabbed a fire extinguisher, pinned it open and dropped it in the engine compartment. Then he jumped over the side. Fire out, we picked him up, tied the boat next to ours and brought it back to Island.
