Time stands still for no sailor! I started in the "Elmo" era as in Zumwalt. In 72 we could wear outer gear as in peacoat with civies and that went away. Then the utility unifiorm gave way to the Navy going back to the dungarees after only a few years. Then jumpers went away for the "salt and peppers" and the double breasted dress blues and combo cap - not to mention the winter working blues - aka what most called the gestapo uniform. Then low and behold jumpers came back along with white hats and the s&p and dress blue uniform went away. They kept the gestapo and put the white hat on it - that was so stupid looking it was not even funny. The best uniform change I think was when they put the women in jumpers! That erased the line between male and female, in that uniform made us all just sailors! My biggest pet peave - was when they gave the surface warfare sweater to everyone - it initially was just for surface warriors - I could have lived with it becoming a qualification sweater (SS, AC, AW - etc). This is where I will end this rant! Who know some years from now they might be back in seafarers, after sailors wearing those blue cameo uniforms and combat boots lose their lives at sea because the can not get out of it fast enough, thats what brought the dungarees back - fair winds - shipmate.
Welcome aboard shipmate, May you have Fair Winds and Following Seas! I was Barbers in 77. Did RTC San Diego in 72.
