  • USS Rigel AF58 was Commissioned in 1955 at Ingalls Ship Yard, Pascagoula, Mississippi.
She was designed with one Hold entirely refrigerated, in order to carry perishable food stuffs.
She had a rather high speed hull, and a unique Hurricane Bow, which kept the Bridge Lookouts
a little dryer in the North Atlantic.
I served as a Deck Seaman, 2nd Division from September 1959 until October 1961.
During that time, we made six Med trips in order to replenish the Fleet.
She was definitely a work Ship, but very comfortable due to being rather new.
