This was just a majestic base--especially the hangers!!! For those who don't know--they were formally used during WW2 for the lighter-than-air dirigibles
With the exception the mountains--the hangers were the most visible landmarks in the area. Hanger 1 was constucted of steel as 2 & 3 were wooden structures
During my stay--they were supporting P-3C Orions (which were not small ships themselves). They were dwarfed by the hangers. One of the stories that was circulated was--in the top of Hanger 1 (pictured on the left) clouds would form inside on certain humid days. I actually never saw that myself though. Our spaces were in Hanger 3 on the other side of the runway
The base was located on US 101 south of San Francisco at the mouth of the S F Bay. NAS Alameda was across the bay from Frisco at the bottom of Oakland
