Military Sealift Transportation Service (MSTS) as USNS Sgt. Charles E. Mower (T-AP-186)
When I was a tot, 2-3 years old, 1952-3. My dad got orders to Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. He went on ahead there and my mom and I later sailed from San Francisco on the USNS Sgt. Charles E. Mower to join him. There were other wives and children onboard too. I have a few memories of that voyage. The mess hall had tables that were covered with white table clothes. Another memory was of an abandon ship drill, where we had to wear life jackets and gather at lifeboats. I remember the water all around us too.
My mom said that all the dependents were well cared for and it was a very enjoyable voyage with entertainment and good food.
Hmm- seems I was once a sailor back then too.
