  • in early 70s we didn't have the button up coat.  Dress blues and whites were crackerjack style, undress whites had a white button up shirt, but no jacket. all worn with Dixie cap.

Dungarees and chambray  shirt was the working uniform with either ball cap or Dixie cap.

It must have been late 75 or 76 that they came out with the ridiculous suit uniform. I was working Admiral's staff (shore duty on Flag Barge) and he authorized us to not change to the new uniform. so I never had to wear it. The Admiral hated the new uniform as much as we did.

  • I have a couple questions about the uniforms that you wore during the early 70s until the early 80s. First, did you have a dress white uniform? If you did, what did it look like? Second, when you were in your double-breasted dress blue uniform, did you wear your rank on the button-up dress white shirt like collar devices, soft shoulder boards or sewn on the left sleeve like on all of the other uniforms. Third, did you have black plastic buttons on your peacoat or were the buttons the same silver ones that were on your dress blue coat? Fourth, did you like the CPO style double-breasted uniform with the combination cover more or less than the jumpers and white hats?
