Company 469 USNTC San Diego 1968

So many years ago, but I still recall almost every face and personality. It’s amazing how those few months solidified the feelings of comradery for life. Leaving the camp for my first ship the USS REHOBOTH AGS50 Stationed out of Treasure Island, San Francisco, I felt prepared to handle the job. However, I was not prepared for living on a small, old, mess of a ship, just returned from westpac, that I was not prepared for. Smelly chain hanging hammocks, poor air conditioning, rust bucket inside and out...lol. It soon headed to dry dock and we went through an overhaul and soon headed out that Golden gate with brass sparkling, guns polished, radar spinning! I grew to love every inch of that ship, all the memories of my ship mates and every exotic port in the Far East, before being reassigned to the USS RECLAIMER ARS42. Home based in Pearl Harbor! Another rust bucket headed for dry docks and a complete overhaul. I knew a little something about that this time... Soon off to westpac... made quite a few stops in Vietnam onboard this hard working salvage vessel... Also revisited many of the exotic R&R Far East ports in between tours... fell in love with that beautiful ship too... poor air conditioning and all...
