  • !I served aboard USS Tripoli LPH-10. I was a Radioman assigned to Comphibron 5 staff. I remember we left San Diego Oct. 1, 1971 enroute Westpac and Vietnam. We were gone almost a year. Our first stop was Subic Bay, P.I.where we went through upkeep. Then on to Vietnam where we were “on the line” for 30+ days. I worked out of the “Comm Office” for RMCS Jack Meddles. He was the senior RM for CPR-5 staff. I recall him being relieved by RMCS Cookson. When we returned to San Diego we (CPR-5). Moved off the ship and into 3 buildings down by the Mole pier. That was 1972. I was a 3rd class RM by then and made 2nd while in those buildings by the mole pier. I remember RMCS Cookson calling me back to the RM’s building and chewing me out for being “out of uniform”! I said “but I’m not Senior”, he said “yes you are, you made 2nd!! Ya bum!” I’ll never forget that first cruise aboard Tripoli! On the line in Nam for 30+ days, then back to Subic for upkeep and Liberty!!!!
