USS Grouper with Colossus

Following conversion from SSK-214 to AGSS-214, USS GROUPER was assigned as a test platform to the Underwater Sound Laboratory in New London. During this conversion, the six tubes forward and associated torpedo storage were removed and replaced by power supplies and related SONAR equipment to support transducer and hydrophone testing. As a test platform for the sound lab, GROUPER made many trips to the deep waters off Bermuda and seas further south for the purpose of SONAR test and evaluation. The large device just aft of the sail is mounting frame configured with about 200 active sonar transducers. The billboard looking device along the port side of the sail housed hydrophones for T&E, new developments in passive SONAR technology.
