In January of this year, the President signed legislation allowing veterans to salute the flag at parades, etc. This was mentioned in an article of my latest Fleet Reserve Association magazine. Unfortunately, I've "tossed" it and do not know the bill number, but it is for real.

    • AMEN
  • A lot of people lack respect for the flag and our veterans, this is nothing new. It's even more sad that we as people and citizens must pass a law to show respect for the flag. What does it take to be a member in the US Armed Forces? First thing that comes to mind is to defend our country at all costs! What does that mean? You will defend our great nation against Communism and Socialism and give an oath. Second, write a blank check on your life and serve your country well.
Now that Obama has been elected, will our great nation become a Communist or Socialist country now? Why are so many countries so happy to see Obama get elected? Do they see trends in our politics that they are so use to themselves? Maybe so...but now the damage is done.
    • As a Navy veteran, the lack of respect to the flag makes me violently ill. The lack of respect for the country itself even more so. One of the things I try to remember is that this (flag burner, person who talks during the National Anthem, use you imagination) butt head's right to be an a-hole if he wants to be is one of the things I spent 11 years defending. I can only hope that his children who will be sickened by anything he does anyway will grow up to join one of the services and then we'll see if he sings a different tune. GOD BLESS AMERICA!
  • Shoot, I remember my two Navy brothers & two Army sisters ALWAYS saluting the flag at parades while the rest of us non-military put our hands over our hearts! I always get tears with things like that, now I wear waterproof mascara! LOL Course they were in uniform then, but I always remember standing for the flag to pass, the Anthem etc. Just let me say a heartfelt thank you to all our service members who fought proud for our country & freedoms. ALL GAVE SOME, SOME GAVE ALL
  • At the Veteran Day Ceremony on the USS Hornet, a whole lot of us Veterans rendered the Salute during colors. It was a pleasant surprise and proud moment.
  • Veterans and Eldery are the only ones to stand in honor of our flag

    why is this?
    • Thanks, Jerry.
I was saluting at the playing of the National Anthem, when wearing a cover, but was not sure that it was authorized.
      Now I know.

  • Hi everyone, Frenchy here just join.. Well I have a problem with the Norfolk Naval base.
I was picking my son up his ship Uss Enterprise and was in my American Legion shirt and hat
and I knew the colors were going to be coming down. I was a the guard house at the gate and
got out of my car to render Salute to the colors I also defend and a Navy Cop in dark blue uniform
came over and told me to get back in my car. I told him I was a veteran that I was going to salute
the colors and he said if you don't get in your car now, I will arrest you. I followed his instruction
and told my son what had happen. The regular Navy guys came over and said there were sorry .
This makes no sense at all. We are Veterans that served 6 years or 20 years should not make
any differance.. Well my son told me, Dad this is the new navy not like your time and you pride.
I reported the Navy Police at that gate to the main office and they said will take care of it.
Sure they will.. I find out next week cause I'm gonna pick my son up again at the same time
and see what happens. This is really crazy.. Well sorry about venting my first time but this
slaluting the flag is getting to me... Gerry
    • Frenchy,Keep us informed as to what happens next week please!
    • It would have made an interesting arrest.
