    I came aboard in late May from NTC GREAT LAKES. Met her in Athens, to S-1 Division until after WESPAC. Got transferred to USS Intrepid(CVS-11)  at beginning of decom. I'm PROUD to have had the Honor to serve on her. PARTY ON!

    I was aboard the Hotel Shangri-La (which was designated CVA-38 in those days) Nov. 63 to Dec. 66.  I ended up running our Target Designation System, MK 6 and MK 5.  Transistors and vacuum tubes were our daily diet.  I'm still amazed just how well Fox Div. kept all their equipment working.  The gun director radar was so well tuned it would actually start walking up the 1/4" steel cable to the target tow aircraft.  The pilot would always let us know with some urgency when that was happening.  It was great to see Homer Colclasure writing on the comment wall.  I'm hoping I can still reach him and get up to date.

    Served aboard the Shangri La from 1963 to 1966 as a Fire Control Technician in Fox Division.  We had the luck to shoot the "Delmar" off the towing aircraft and were awarded cigars by the "Gun Boss" during a Battle Efficiency Drill.  The ship was awarded the Battle Efficiency "E" for the efforts of all the departments.

    Served on the Shangri-La from December 1958 to February 1960 in Fox Division as a FT.  Made the last WestPac  cruise in 1959 and left her in February 1960 before she went to the East Coast.  We were in Buckner Bay, Okinawa when the Nationalist Chinese shot down several MIGs over the straights of Formosa.  We were underway within 8 hours and spent the next week patrolling the straights.  It was the first time we actually armed the planes.  At the end of the week we were back in Sasebo as if nothing had happened.  We lost 5 aircraft and 3 pilots on that cruise as well as an airman due to an on board accident.  Even in "peacetime" it was a dangerous place to be.

    Served on the Shang during the 61 Med Cruise as Radarman (primarily Bridge Radar Watch) before being shipped out to Gtmo and a very interesting tour during the Missile Crisis (got out in July of 64)

    Served on the Shangri-La from February 1970 until June 1971. Was a DP2 in S-7 Division under Lt(jg) Scott J. Taylor. Made the West Pac cruise around the world which included Rio de Janeiro, Subic Bay, Yokosuka, Manila, Hong Kong, Sydney, Wellington and six line periods on Yankee Station.We were also initiated as Shellbacks and joined the Order of the Golden Dragon.  It was an experience I shall never forget.

    I went aboard the Shang in aug.-68 and left in jun.71. did the 69 med cruise and the west pac cruise.I help decommision her up in Boston.Iwas in #3fireroom.Have contacted quite a few  fellow bt's along with other shipmates.

    This is realy exciting, both my Dad and Uncle Ray, (my mom's brother) served on the Shang.

    Served on board from Jan.1965 to Dec.1966 .Was a 3 Class Machinist Mate MM3 . Assigned to "M" Division ,the Aft Engine Room.
